Another week in RehabLand...

And what a week it was! Lots of ups and downs, happiness and sadness. I got what I asked Santa for already: equipment and the start for a new clinic. And I got four pounds of espresso! Ho ho ho! I can't wait until clinic starts in the New Year.

At Madison, one of our doctors celebrated ten years at the Hotel. We finally got a new doctor to replace our last one who retired recently. Then our boss announced that he/she is taking a new job in a month, four hours away.

One of our staff complained of chest pains and got a cancer diagnosis instead once he/she was hospitalized.

School is on hold, I'm awaiting sentencing, as one of my old professors used to say. (Actually, he said waiting for the plea bargains....really miss that sense of humor.)

In a way, I feel the same. I'd like to plead for my sanity, but I'm just going to relax and see what happens.

More to come...

Good excuses

Here are some really good excuses to miss your appointment with your specialist. (some I had lately).

1. You have horrible diarrhea. I am a nurse, but so happy you're not coming in today.

2. You're currently in the ICU (happened to two people lately) which leads to ...

3. You're on a vent. I really believe ABCs apply here.

3. You're on major antibiotics. We can't perform that procedure you want when that happens.

4. You're still on a (name any) major blood thinner. I'm not talking aspirin, folks. If you're on Plavix, Coumadin, Ticlid or a couple of others, we can't work on you, either.

Yet, even with these good ones, there are the run-of-the-mill ones, not so good ones, too.

1. I'm in too much pain.
2. I'm not in pain, so I don't need to come anymore (which is followed up by a call in one week...)
3. The weather is too bad (like it never snows here) or
4. It's too nice to go sit in a doctor's office.
5. Amnesia is always a good excuse. One recently drove the doc nuts. "Well, I was late (missed) because I was at the (fill in the blank) party getting a free lunch."

I'm stopping the list here, but I'm sure all of you office folks get some really good ones.

Stay tuned....more to come.

So glad it's Monday...

And the crazy full moon weekend is over. Being in charge ain't all it's cracked up to be!

My shift in the hot seat included:

1. Assigning all the patients. The Slug was in charge before me on the previous shifts, and lo and behold, one patient went unassigned. Granted, said patient is easy to care for (little to do on our shift) but it really looks bad if you forget to give him/her a nurse.

2. Avoiding mutiny in the ranks. Another installment of "he said, she said, I wanted OT and didn't get it." My advice: communicate. Said nurses could have and would have avoided the whole drama thing if they just would have talked to the people they needed to.

No, it's just too easy to be passive aggressive and yell at your co-workers...

3. Dealing with a patient who thought chest pain is no big deal. The joy of all the tests, time spent on the phone, with the on-call doc, with the patient's regular doc, the supervisor, the pharmacy. I really miss my phone headset on those days.

4. Blood pressure issues and a patient who doesn't want to go home. He/she is mad at the world and I was the lucky target. Finally, we got everything under control...at least for the oncoming shift.

And blissfully, every single person showed up before I was ready to leave the building, so I was not forced to stay and work a double. I am always so, so happy to go home.

More to come...

Nuggets for May 19

Yes, it's Tuesday again, and I'm waiting for my car today. So since Starbucks is so lovely, I remembered the ear buds and am listening to intermittent Christmas music, yes, on May 19, thanks to Adore Jazz.

Here are a few goodies I've run into in between reading for my cert exam and writing an essay.

From my ANA SmartBrief (via e-mail)
Hospital secret shoppers looking for handwashing violators (at wcvb.com)
Just use that hand sanitizer or wash please!

Just another reason to get your red dress on...
Gender disparities seen in EMS care for chest pain (from reuters.com) I was thinking about this the other day when I was talking to my grade school friend who just got a new mitral valve (along with a free CABG x 4...yes 4)

On the job hunt
Okay, all you nursing school grads, and general job hunters, here are a couple of great articles on things to do for your interview and things not to do for your job interview (both from nursinglink.com)

'Tis the season
It's getting warm in our neck of the woods and sunny, too. Memorial Day is right around the corner, and you know what that means...the pools open and you spend more time out in the sun.

To keep your skin in shape keep an eye out for the signs of skin cancer. If you're high risk, like yours truly, stock up on your favorite sunscreen and stay out of the sun if you can avoid it. If not, use that sunscreen liberally and cover as you can. You'll avoid scars and wrinkles that way, too.
