The polar vortex has arrived. It arrived just at the start of the weekend. I have already fallen even in "slip-proof" nursing shoes. They don't help when it's also windy. I added some of these to my shopping list.
Some virus from the neighborhood has invaded. Dahey is recuperating and Bubba is acting a little out of sorts, despite my hand washing protocol and cleaning schedule. We've all had our flu shots, so hopefully, it's just something random. Another joy of winter!
I'm happy this week will be the last one I work this year. More to come in 2017. Stay tuned!

Sometimes I wonder
Why do specialists forget the basics? Wouldn't you expect your doctor to know the basics about flu, even if he/she were not an internist or primary care provider?
I really did want to bang my head into the large conference table as I explained to a patient (who was being evaluated for a specialty rehab program) the basics of caring for someone (grandchild) with the flu.
Said MD walked in and acted as if he/she was clueless to any of the guidelines. It's very handy that the Nursing department makes us do an in-service on flu EVERY year here at the Hotel.
I thought it was a little overkill, but having enough knowledge to explain to patients seems like something an MD might be able to do, too.
I'm just adding this to the crazy day list at the Hotel.
More later...

Call a spade a spade
Working with F, I learn a lot of things that happen on the night shift. She is in tuned to a lot of things going on.
Recently, F. discussed how many people we work with are passive aggressive. When we looked at what's going on, we figured that 90% of the people we work with fit the profile. Is it because of our boss, or our environment? It sure makes this look like it's happening at our place.
Besides the latest state of aggression, the latest wave of flu is hitting the unit. People are dropping like flies. It sure would be nice if those same people might think about getting a flu shot next year...or staying home when they're contagious, so they don't share it with the rest of us.
Should be fun to see how the rest of the week goes. Stay tuned!
