Just say no

When they ask you to forward e-mails that just don't seem right at work, just say no or you could end up in a situation like this one.

That is all...more to come.

Teamwork...not!

How's this for teamwork....

1. Boss tells you, "I'll handle that." and proceeds not to do what you ask him (communicate).

2. So, doing the job your boss asked you to do, you send an e-mail to all the affected parties for further feedback and updates on the plan Boss asked you to implement.

3. One of the teams sends a very inappropriate e-mail with feedback, then demands your presence at their next team meeting.

4. Boss also mentions that he/she will go with you to meeting.

5. Since you thought this was a team project all along, you invite some of the other folks who helped you work on the plan.

6. Said team (who wants you at the meeting) says, "Why do they have to come?"

7. You kindly reply that you thought an interdisciplinary team was just that...an interdisciplinary team.

And pray, that your boss will actually show up for said meeting since you think he'll just ditch everyone and leave you out in the cold.

We shall see...so much for team cohesiveness in RehabLand.

Wrapping up the week...

Where there is no imagination there is no horror.  ~Arthur Conan Doyle, Sr.

The week is winding down and I am enjoying my training and my time on the floor.

As always, it can be a soap opera kind of world at the Hotel. Love and lust figures into the installment this week. Lovelorn housekeeper falls for the charms of one of our artistic characters and wins a transfer to another unit. No fraternization allowed, just like the military, remember?

Another one of our patients decides he may go home immediately if one person comes back. Former roommate made a pass at his significant other and he's not too darned happy.  The guilty party is in another unit, but as always, misses the Hotel and will do whatever to come back to our place. Don't think it's gonna fly this time...I hope anyway.

It could be a November to remember, though. Boss decided to come in and actually talk to me, and let me know I could apply for the part-time position working in one of our clinics. This is, of course, because no one else has yet applied. Another older nurse is applying, so out of respect for him, I'm declining that "opportunity", because he'd really like it. He has a lot going for him, too--over 10 years experience and an affable manner. The Slug may apply, but ON still has a chance at one of the positions available, and I hope he gets it over the Slug, who doesn't deserve it.

Sometimes you just have to say no to one thing to enjoy another.

Back to studying and have a great weekend all.

I know the secrets, too

Maha so eloquently described the secrets in the ER in a recent post and it got me thinking about the unspoken stories at the Hotel.

The secrets aren't secrets to everyone mind you, but they lie hidden. The cancer diagnosis no one wants to talk about, yet the specialist charts it in his/her notes. The criminal past of a patient, which includes violence against certain types of staff members. The homelessness, violence, love children, suicide attempts, and madness lurks everywhere you look.

In addition, it's not just the patients with the secrets. It's the staff, too. The relative of a nurse who was forced to go back to work to defend her husband in a criminal trial in which all of her significant assets were seized. The nurse who has an inappropriate relationship with a patient or two or three. The nurse who can't tell the boss he/she has a chronic illness, because he/she is afraid to lose his/her job. The nurse who is an alcoholic, and calls out a lot around the holidays, especially those involving parties or family gatherings.

I wish some would see the light of day, and others, I don't. I shudder at doctors giving a cancer diagnosis like it's just a day in the park, when the prognosis is grim.  I wonder if the criminal patient will hurt me if I'm left alone in the right environment. I wonder if the nurse who's involved with the patient will suffer repercussions at home. And finally, with the nurses with illnesses of their own, I wonder what will have to happen for them to get the help they need, as the boss sits idly.

We can only wait and see...stay tuned!
