Clueless

Dear Therapist:

I understand your job is to do therapeutic crafts with patients in your clinic.

I don't appreciate it when you leave said patients unsupervised in the area I'm supposed to work and they make such a mess that it will take another two days of housekeeping to clear the air enough so I can breathe again.

Yes, it is a pain that I'm in this space you claim as your own but it's temporary. You only have 4000 square feet elsewhere plus another 3000 of storage. There's only about 400 square feet here free that I can use due to the junk, er, craft supplies.

Remember nurses take care of the health part of health and wellness in rehab, and if the air's contaminated where I'm supposed to work, I won't be healthy enough to take care of patients.

I'm going to take the high road on this one, but if it gets ugly, I assure you, I'll make sure you don't forget it.

Wishing you many clues,

Sincerely,

RehabRN

Head banging or TGIF hurry up

Maybe it's because it's a long weekend. Maybe it's because I've had more than my share of head banging needed recently. If I were a pitcher, my ERA would be terrible. Two patients scheduled no-showed or refused to cooperate. Very frustrating.

Some of the people you work with have amnesia and screw stuff up no matter how many times you tell them something.Asking these same people to think is a dangerous thing. "Oh you mean I was supposed to answer when so-and-so called on the teleconferencing unit to discuss x patient." Yes, Dumbelina, you sure were supposed to answer. Even a master's degree in your discipline is of no use.

I think of the article I read about doctors not wanting to use stethoscopes in the 19th century because, "Why do that when I can just put my ear to someone's chest?" I want to yell the same thing about the technology at the Hotel, with which they do the same thing.

Thank goodness I already bought all the beverages I'll need for this weekend. I will be partaking of some nice cold ones as soon as it's feasible Friday.

Stay tuned and hope you enjoy your Friday.

It happens to nurses too

I saw this post on a site I venture to regularly and it just reminded me that restaurant folks aren't the only ones who get caught up in this dilemma.

One ED nurse got fired for an Instagram post.

Word to the wise: be careful out there, folks. Know and understand how to use social media approriately.

Vacate for a vacation

Yes, it's true, I've been enjoying mine for the past week and I have to go back to work tomorrow. However, I can't imagine not having any time to recharge and renew. One or two days in a row is just not enough.

I read an article recently that stated, "According to an Expedia.com survey, 35 percent of Americans don't use all of their vacation days each year." Sure, some places may pay you for saving up your vacation days and cashing them in, and in this day and age, it wouldn't be too bad, but I cannot imagine doing that anymore. I just need my sanity. Sanity involves leaving the premises and not coming back for a few days.

The best thing I read about vacations was this list: Signs that you need a vacation. Reminds me of the Dilbert book I read at the store the other day: What do you call a sociopath in a cubicle?

Another article talked about how vacations can help you with job performance. I totally believe this. While I'm expecting to get the most demanding assignment on the floor when I get back (they like to do that to people returning from any time off on my unit) right now, I feel as if a rest will be helpful in dealing with it. Having memories of quiet time, coffee, good books and bubble baths, even now, makes me feel relaxed. If that doesn't work, a good time-out never hurt anyone!
