I had an interesting conversation with my coworker's boss (who's really my boss's boss) recently.
I got to tell he/she about the latest tribulations trying to make things work. He/she listened, then mentioned how I have no appropriate training.
What I wanted to say:
"Yes, remember that quality training I took last year? That's how I got qualified to lead a quality improvement project? I've taken this training five years ago, too."
"Your quality person? He/she's not been trained."
"Would you like to tell the Hotel boss that I can't finish this project?"
Unfortunately, I didn't. I'm stewing...and plotting my escape. Being unappreciated is annoying.
Stay tuned...

On the other side
Did I blink during Nurses' Week and suddenly it's August? Yes, I did. And Bubba reminded me today that in two weeks, he starts high school.
What's happened? My boss was removed, then two months later resigned. When I found out why, I wasn't surprised. Basically, being a bully comes back to get you.
Bubba went to MiddleState U's Science Camp again. He had fun. We picked him up and enjoyed a weekend hotel jaunt in a suite free (that's what happens when you save years of credit card points). We ate, drank and were merry. We wouldn't miss our designated IHOP stop for anything, because it's become a tradition.
The summer of the first year of Trump has been heartening. I last switched jobs fortuitously right before the big 2008 crash.
I'm ready again, but I'm older and more leery. There are some things to be said for basic security, short commutes and decent benefits. All the folks at the Hotel eligible are getting out as soon as they can.
Nevertheless, I'm preparing for whatever fall might bring.
Stay tuned.

I'm not hiding
I'm just dealing with fallout. Fallout related to the end of our hospital's fiscal year.
Some of thefun meetings I've been subjected to:
1. Year end recap
Actually, I'll be forced to do that next month. Boss didn't show for this month's meeting (that's really a waste of time).
2. Meetings with my boss, coworkers and a provider who was forced to be there.
An hour of telling people what I do, what I am allowed to do, and why you telling me what to do isn't a good idea.
NOTE: my boss sat on the sidelines watching this car crash. He/she knows better.
I had fun by pointing out how I know what you know, and when I knew it, even though I'm not supposed to do your job.
3. "Scut work"
Said provider in #2 said he/she isn't going to do the work that other providers in our system do, because he/she can delegate that "scut work" to the NP. BTW none of the scut work mentioned here is even done by an MD in our system.
NOTE: this "scut work" requires a physician or licensed independent provider to write an order. Our MDs are really "busy" not writing as many orders as they can, especially at odd hours.
My favorite excuse: "just blame the computer". This wreaks havoc for the nurses, especially when your facility supposedly "disciplines" providers for too many verbal or telephone orders.
I really wanted to ask what he/she normally does when not goofing off, but I bit my tongue.
The train is coming, so off I go. Enjoy your day wherever you are!

The sun will come out tomorrow...
Yes, my life is still crazy. My exams really are in one week.
Methinks I'll have to hold off on posting until they're over because I feel so overwhelmed between work and this looming test. Or not. Decisions...
I've only worked YEARS on my own time for this moment.
At least, I had a good day. Still have the a-holes giving me trouble. I went to spineless boss and said, "You're his/her boss. You need to handle it." (Can't believe I did that, but I was really irate at the petty cr&p)
On a bright, shiny note, our area chief nurse at Madison nominated me for an award. It really is a big hairy deal if I make it all the way through the 13 levels my chief's essay has to pass--hospital, region, witch doctors, then the big kahuna. (okay, no witch doctors...)
We'll see...as they say, it is an honor to be nominated. Frankly, I thought I was getting in trouble!
Stay tuned...

Shut out
I almost went 3 for 3 today.
1. The patient portal I was supposed to get patients registered in for the SU was down...yet again today. I get to try tomorrow for the complete shutout for the week.
2. I got the dreaded Professional Development e-mail, "Sorry, you (a nurse) don't deserve time off on duty to speak at xx International Conference."
It just doesn't matter that you have your boss, your boss's boss and the boss's boss's boss sending letters on your behalf. No, but "you can do this on your vacation time."
But, your colleagues in the department (not nurses) get an all-expense paid trip to their conference.
Idiots. Will be happy to consult my HR/lawyer friend. I smell a rat.
3. My computer keeps acting up. If it dies, I doubt the cheapskates at Madison will let me have another before the end of the fiscal year.
I will be so happy when this week is finally over!

Down the rabbit hole
Sometimes life surely seems that way. I've been busy doing this, that and the other thing and I feel so overwhelmed.
Just like being on the floor, you have to have a plan.
The current plan:
1. Orient the new boss. Nice character, so this should not be difficult. I like hands-on management, especially when I don't feel like I need to take a cultural orientation class to figure out what to do with them.
2. Orient my manager re: my new projects. I just love being an employee who reports to multiple people.
3. Work, work, work until the end of the semester for my grad class. So glad it will be done in just shy of one week.
Then this house really will be merry!
Stay tuned...

How to tell if your boss is an idiot, part 1
Yes, more and more, either he/she's got amnesia or needs a vacation, I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that my boss is a first-class idiot.
Case in point: recall the post about uncompensated training recently? Guess what? I can be compensated per rule #xx in the handbook.
Our person who normally handles this is out of the office (on vacation) but the chirpy HR lady they switched me to at Central HR said, "Yep. If he/she can't let you use that comp time for a day off, you get your OT."
I e-mail this and proposed clinic training plan to boss.
His/her response: "Really?"
So glad I'm not working or I'd bang my head firmly into the wall...over and over. Just makes me wonder what else he/she's been messing up in the mean time.
More to come...it's one thing after another here at the Hotel!

Tired Tuesday
I'm just way too diurnal. Working at night kills me!
Now back to the old daytime grind. The bosses are driving me nuts. Our fearless leader, aka The Big Man (for literal and figurative reasons) is deciding to get crazy. Could it be that he's just got more time on his hands? Perhaps. He's just started bugging me about our presentation we'll be making very soon. The very same presentation he's done very little work on up until now, which I initiated and put together. The very same presentation he didn't want to do since too many nurses may show up. I just hope someone refills his ADD script before we go. And, no, I will not answer my cell phone if he calls just to "check on the progress".
The mainline boss (aka the charge nurse) is getting my goat, too. Thankfully, he/she is not nearly as obnoxious as our leader.
And now, I'm retiring...to a nap. Stay tuned!
