It's the long weekend

TGIF! We started the weekend off with fun. We went and rode some rides not far from home tonight at one of many picnics. Bubba and I had a funnel cake and I reminisced about how many of the rides are still the same as when I was a kid. It would be nice if the tickets were the same. I couldn't believe the prices.

Bubba even saw some kids from school, including a girl who saw him as we were leaving. She was a tall blonde, and had there not been more traffic, I think Bubba would have run faster to the car. However, Blonde Babe stayed on her side of the picnic and we went home.

Dahey even got into the modern era: he joined his first social networking site. His crazy friend from high school was the first person to find him online, so it was like a mini reunion. I first met Max via e-mail and I'll never forget how he described his time in the military: "After doing my first hitch and finding out there are no permanent marching band jobs in the military, I decided to learn a trade and become an electrician."

Some things change, and yes, some things (and people) stay the same.

Stay tuned.

Weekend fun of sorts

On weekends, besides catching up on chores around the house, I often volunteer. This weekend, I volunteered at PrivateU interviewing students for scholarships. It was very interesting.

I was assigned to a team with a current scholarship student, another alum, and myself. Here are some things I noticed.

1. The kid who wanted to major in computer science, really was a computer nerd (nice, but totally freaked out by my interview question I asked all the candidates).

2. Of the applicants our group reviewed, only two of the candidates were boys. The rest (about 10 in all) were girls.

3. Everyone (except for 2) came because PrivateU has a special early admit program to medical school.

4. Not surprisingly, everyone could tell me how medicine was so important and why they wanted to be a physician. Not one of them demonstrated a real idea of what other professionals do in health care, including the kid who planned on majoring in biomedical engineering.

From the description one gave me, it would have been more appropriate to tell her she could spend more time with patients as a nurse, but blowing her mind right then and there seemed like a bad thing to do.

5. I had all of their applications on paper, but was not sent any other details. My co-interviewers obviously reviewed their homework, but I did not. They seemed a little irritated by this at first, but they got used to me, eventually.

One gave me her form, and I reviewed it. I opted out and asked a non-standard question, which they liked, and was not on the suggested questions handout.

Not surprisingly, many more alums will interview more kids next weekend. Frankly, I thought one weekend of that was enough.

A lot of good kids and only so many scholarships. Now I know what I have to do to get Bubba in shape for college. A whole lot of work.

More to come...

Sometimes...

You just need a little help to brush up on your history lessons.

Last week, Andy Murray became the first British man in 77 years to win a Wimbledon singles title.

And thanks to TheLi.st, I'm reminded that the women (although waiting) still finished before the men.

Virginia Wade, I hope there's another little girl somewhere in Britain batting tennis balls around, so you don't have to wait 77 years for a woman to do it AGAIN.

That is all. Stay tuned!

Think pink

Now it all makes sense. Monday madness was just a harbinger of the full moon at the Hotel. But this one is special. It's pink and in some areas (not RehabLand, though), there's even a lunar eclipse.

No dogs eating girls this time, but it should be interesting!

Stay tuned...

Fun weekend

I plan on having a bit of fun this weekend if it ever stops raining. Today was beautiful and sunny, until one hour before I was going home. Things turned stormy and the thunder boomed and lightning flashed. I was happy to make it home without getting caught in any hail.

This weekend I'll do two things I don't get to do much: hang out with my girl friends. For part one, it'll be sans little kids (one office mate is bringing her adult daughter along). What fun could a few girls have on a weekend: a spa day, trip to a winery, or retail therapy, you say?

Nope. We're going on a scavenger hunt. Yes, a scavenger hunt, which is held every year at the largest park in RehabLand. It's a cooperative thing among the local municipality, the parks department and the cultural attractions (museums, schools, etc.) that are around located near the park.

It has tons of rules, like no cell phones can be used, and you can't separate in your groups. This includes when you go to the bathroom. (Your group is expected to wait for you outside and not scope out the rest of the course). Besides that, like any other public fun thing to do anymore, you have to sign a release saying it's not their fault if you fall off the carousel or trip down the steps of the museum.

For part two of the girls weekend, my pharmacist friend is coming to town, with husband and kids in tow. It's her annual pilgrimage back to RehabLand, and happily, it coincides with the kids' Spring Break out on the coast. If we're lucky, we'll get a group of friends together and we'll just go to dinner or visit at somebody's house.

While she's here, we plan on starting the book. Still working on a title, but we're starting a chapter called the Top 100 Ways to Annoy Your Pharmacist. She's got 50 and says we can get more by the time she gets here. Should be an interesting weekend!

Enjoy your weekend, wherever you roam! Stay tuned.
