Multiple headaches today

It all started around 3AM. The front bringing the crazy weather showed up then and the migraine started. Nausea was next, and then the dizziness started. I got some meds and it got better, but the dizziness continued. Snow started at 5AM.

Took the cure for the dizziness and waited. Was still dizzy. Called in sick to the happy nursing supervisor, who did not sound thrilled. Texted my manager and he/she was cool. Went back to bed.

Wind blowing woke me up. Branches broke off trees in our yard. Dearest brother called to tell me his electric was out at his apartment complex. The complex needed assistance and so I called some local agencies via 211, since the staff there were busy making people lunch and running heaters to keep them warm. Electric Company gave no ETA on restoring power.

Went over to give him my battery backup so he could call and text if needed. Somewhere on trip, my windshield cracked. Another headache. Thankfully, the electric came on right after I was over there.

Now, my moody teenager (who was off school) is crabby.

I'm ready for Calgon to take me away, folks. Off I go...stay tuned for more later.

May your day be wonderful wherever you are.

It is Monday...

Boom, thunder, and now hail.

This day will certainly go out with a bang here in RehabLand, if a bunch of other storms won't get diverted.

We can only hope...

Dear Mother Nature

Please stop the tornado/severe weather crap. Tornado season officially ended November 1.

Yours truly (because I would like the SU to be standing tomorrow, so I can go to work),

Rain, hail, tornadoes

Dear Mother Nature:

Who says our Friday night wasn't exciting? I thank my lucky stars that I have a finished basement in which to hide from the rousing storms that were going through RehabLand.

Yes, we missed some fun Friday night stuff at baseball and the mall, because it got windy and spooked a lot of people, but there are bonuses. As I already mentioned the basement, I was thrilled that we still had electric and cold beer.

So let me just say thanks for avoiding my neighborhood. My nerves were frayed, WildDog was stressed, but happy with us.

At least, with a cold Hefeweizen, I could watch the storm reports and chill in a safe area.

Please send the next set of storms somewhere else. We (and all the folks in Oklahoma) have had enough water, hail and wind for quite a long time.

Sincerely (really, if it works...),

RehabRN

Thanking the heavens

It's not good, but it is getting better. One of Dahey's relatives was out in the storms recently and was seriously injured because he couldn't been seen due to wind, rain and darkness.

He and his family were in a car accident and he was the worst injury of the lot (rest of the injuries were minor). The medical staff at PrivateU are watching and waiting since he had to have this procedure and a small part of his brain removed to reduce brain swelling post-injury.

Send all those good thoughts and prayers our way.  It will be a long road ahead, no matter what happens.

Stay tuned...

My plan

Is to stay here under ground watching TV with Bubba and WildDog while we wait for all the crazy, tornadic weather to head on over and out. Dahey is stuck at work where it's been raining like cats and dogs all afternoon.

I can't wait until winter and snow show up again...this storm crap is OLD!!

I'm so glad I'm not at the Hotel. Evacuating patients is worse than having a herd of 10 year old kvetching about not having a fully charged Nintendo DS (or other gaming device.)

Back to the pacing dog...

TGIF!

Yes, I'm glad it's Friday. The heat and stormy weather may be back, but the weekend is here.

Hooray!

Stay tuned...who knows what fun Bubba will find this weekend.

Fun weekend

I plan on having a bit of fun this weekend if it ever stops raining. Today was beautiful and sunny, until one hour before I was going home. Things turned stormy and the thunder boomed and lightning flashed. I was happy to make it home without getting caught in any hail.

This weekend I'll do two things I don't get to do much: hang out with my girl friends. For part one, it'll be sans little kids (one office mate is bringing her adult daughter along). What fun could a few girls have on a weekend: a spa day, trip to a winery, or retail therapy, you say?

Nope. We're going on a scavenger hunt. Yes, a scavenger hunt, which is held every year at the largest park in RehabLand. It's a cooperative thing among the local municipality, the parks department and the cultural attractions (museums, schools, etc.) that are around located near the park.

It has tons of rules, like no cell phones can be used, and you can't separate in your groups. This includes when you go to the bathroom. (Your group is expected to wait for you outside and not scope out the rest of the course). Besides that, like any other public fun thing to do anymore, you have to sign a release saying it's not their fault if you fall off the carousel or trip down the steps of the museum.

For part two of the girls weekend, my pharmacist friend is coming to town, with husband and kids in tow. It's her annual pilgrimage back to RehabLand, and happily, it coincides with the kids' Spring Break out on the coast. If we're lucky, we'll get a group of friends together and we'll just go to dinner or visit at somebody's house.

While she's here, we plan on starting the book. Still working on a title, but we're starting a chapter called the Top 100 Ways to Annoy Your Pharmacist. She's got 50 and says we can get more by the time she gets here. Should be an interesting weekend!

Enjoy your weekend, wherever you roam! Stay tuned.

When it rains...

It pours, the lights flicker, the wind shakes the windows and WildDog starts opening doors to tell us he's not staying in a room by himself.

No, siree, I'm a guard dog and I'm "guarding" you whether you like it or not.

At least he does not destroy things or jump in bed. He just sits on my side of the bed and whines...and I wake up to pat him on the head to quiet him.

I love summer thunderstorms. At least, it wasn't a tornado!

Terrible tornadoes

Are currently terrorizing the middle of the country, and a really scary story..a tornado hits a hospital in Joplin, MO.

So happy our tribe made it back in one piece, since there were storms aplenty on our way back home. Bubba was content assembling his new toy dinosaur (which has a million pieces) and a trip to Dahey's favorite sandwich place. He wolfed down his Italian sandwich like we hadn't fed him in days. This couch potato child swam and played for hours and he ate everything in sight.

He also slept soundly every single night, which was lovely. Can't wait until the tribe can hit the road again one of these days.

It was nice to be away, though. I, am back to reality: housework, computer work and work at the Hotel. I'll be praying for no tornadoes.

Not routine anything

You know you're going to have an off-the-wall night when...

First thing after dinner, one of your veteran nursing assistants wants a new assignment. Her patient with visitors is being an a$&, and it's his birthday. Thankfully, family member is an RN, made him apologize after a long heart-to-heart talk, and all is well. Except NA still got reassigned to another patient at his/her  request. Who got birthday boy? Me.

Next, right as your finishing your charge nurse paperwork and after dinner, the powers that be call a storm warning. Everyone out into the halls...if they'll go. Only about 50% of our people did despite much cajoling. The fun part was dragging in the people who went outside to watch before security brought them inside. One guy came from next door looking for the poker tournament in the rain (none was in progress).  Patients are getting really tired of going into the hall for weather warnings. Had to batten down the rest of them and cross my fingers. Thankfully, it all blew over, slowly.

Another NA wants to go home early. I'm really getting tired of the "I should get to go home early" spiel I'm noticing on my shift. He/she checks with night super, super says OK and he/she leaves, all work done at 2230. Turns out it wasn't so bad after all...he/she had storm damage at home and needed to help family get a generator and a chain saw. Didn't feel so unhappy after all that. However he/she  had  fun getting home. All but one road was blocked by debris from the storm.

Just hoping the Easter bunny doesn't get too wet and I survive my next trip to the Hotel. May need a boat to come home next time.

Stay tuned. It's all good at the Hotel Rehab...most of the time!

Let's hope for a whimper...

Severe storms are rolling through RehabLand, so I hope this year doesn't go out with a bang.

More to come...

What more...

Can you ask for this lovely Mothers' Day weekend:

1. Weather prediction: storms.
2. Husband sick. Dahey worked and something worked him over.
3. That last paper of the semester looming over your head.
4. Working all weekend.

Here's to crossing fingers that I'll get to wear my new dress without being rained on!

More to come...

Stormy weekend? Perhaps not...

So maybe we won't have a stormy moon at our place this weekend...why you ask?

Let me count the ways...

1. We lost some patients. Spring has sprung and they'll do anything to get discharged or go on pass for the weekend. I love that part of spring!

2. The supervisors are not micromanaging at the moment. It helps that a few just got back from vacations in the tropics watching baseball and getting a tan. Want to divert them from looking at your drink at the nurses' station? Just ask them about spring training and who they saw.

3. Some of the drama mamas won't be working this weekend due to illness or vacation. At least they can go nuts at home with their families, and not with us!

I'd say the q-word, but I'm not going to jinx it....stay tuned!

Disturbances

It's crazy, hot and stormy around here. The humidity hits you like a wet blanket when you go outside and though, it seems like it will rain again, not even the weather people know when.

Just like the weather, we have crazy people on the unit...and it's mostly employees. Why some of them are like this immediately following vacation is beyond my comprehension. They just cannot come to work and do a job. No, they want sympathy, or any kind of attention really. It's really nerve-wracking. Hello, neurospsych...can you do an in-house consult?

Besides the crazy people, a lot of crazy things are happening with the non-neurotic people who we work with--car break-ins, house break-ins, deaths, and assaults. All this in the last two weeks could be another thing making the unit hot, besides the ever-questionable functioning of the air conditioner. If we only had water therapy!

The patients I've had were reasonably good lately. No muss, no fuss, not even from the one I expected the most trouble. With all my extra time, I'm finally finishing some of my "required learning" for the computerized in-services. I can only hope it will be as sedate the rest of the week.

And if it ain't crazy enough at work, I'm just amazed at the news lately.

Steve Jobs gets a liver transplant (from http://www.cbsnews.com/)
It's somewhat shocking in many regards, not just because of wealth or status. Should keep those medical ethicists busy for a while.

VA has a rogue cancer unit (from http://www.nytimes.com/)
If Sister Mary Martha, my kindergarten teacher would have seen this, she'd have gotten out that big pointer she used to use and would have a) whacked said doctor, then b) poked him really hard. If only someone at that VA would have!

Finally...keep those cards and letters rolling for Change of Shift here on 6/25. I have to tell you, I may just have a section called the "men's edition" because so many guys are sending in great stories. C'mon ladies, let's give the gentlemen a run for the money, shall we?

Stay tuned...more to come!
