The polar vortex arrived in force yesterday. Bubba was out of school so we packed a lunch and visited our doctor (since he sometimes runs late). All went well and we actually got out earlier than expected.
I sat at my computer so long working on my PublicU presentation that I hurt last night. Oh, the back and other muscles should balk when I'm awake and have plenty of time to walk around.
Tuesdays after a holiday always seem like Mondays.
Oh, the excitement the day will bring.
Stay tuned...

The range of topics is endless
No, folks, but it surely seems that way.
How my day went today:
1. Took Bubba to school again today since it's still below freezing. Guess he's just spoiled, even if his walk to school is short.
I don't want Children/Family Services getting my license for frostbite, if you know what I mean!
2. Went to work and Dahey actually called in the AM
It is a miracle. He's forgotten his phone every day but today. Somehow, he never forgets his lunch.
3. Sat down at my desk to do "paperwork" (aka trees we kill in the name of a "paperless work environment".) Realized it was time to get up almost three hours later.
Wow! I do get a ton of work done when I shut my door. Unfortunately, some paperwork is not as redemptive as others.
4. Heard this argument multiple times from very unhappy people (aka my travelling NP buddy) who had to create a discharge summary on a patient who was at the Hotel with a long, complex course. The curses at copy/paste in the medical record went on and on.
5. Found out that one of my favorite internet sites scooped a big story in health care. Whoa!
Makes me wonder if the Hotel operations will be a take over target.
Stay tuned...

More excitement
Or perhaps excrement (since the whole week's been that way). I'm minding my own business reading about a gluten free diet, and this lady gets all bowel-y.

When you see
Several police cars in the parking lot and two hospital police officers in the lobby on your way into work, it usually means something is going on.
Boy, it's going to be an exciting day!

Rain, hail, tornadoes
Dear Mother Nature:
Who says our Friday night wasn't exciting? I thank my lucky stars that I have a finished basement in which to hide from the rousing storms that were going through RehabLand.
Yes, we missed some fun Friday night stuff at baseball and the mall, because it got windy and spooked a lot of people, but there are bonuses. As I already mentioned the basement, I was thrilled that we still had electric and cold beer.
So let me just say thanks for avoiding my neighborhood. My nerves were frayed, WildDog was stressed, but happy with us.
At least, with a cold Hefeweizen, I could watch the storm reports and chill in a safe area.
Please send the next set of storms somewhere else. We (and all the folks in Oklahoma) have had enough water, hail and wind for quite a long time.
Sincerely (really, if it works...),
RehabRN

Snowmaggedon is on hold. Not a flake in the sky, but all the schools are closed. Let's see what the day brings.

Going all "Network"
1. This sign in a doctor's office from one of my favorite sites, http://www.passiveagressivenotes.com
2. Grumpy vents to Siri (at least she's not human...)
3. The quote here in this video...
My day, however, was not nearly as exciting.
At least, I got my exercise running the steps and plenty of nice comments. The stupid folk must have been hiding in the Hotel somewhere else!

Is it the end?
It certainly is almost the end of the weekend and the end of the year. I will miss that, the weekend part, anyway.
WildDog is getting slower and more incontinent. Not sure when/if his end will come soon. I thought about it the other day when I wrote the Christmas letter. We have had WildDog since before Bubba was born, and he was about 5 years old when we got him. He is getting gray around his muzzle, too.
Even though, he's an old dog, he loves the head scratches and ear rubs.
My car is making all sorts of noises. Dahey is in charge of investigating that. What joy! It's older than Bubba and almost as old as WildDog.
I'm thinking it might be time to just buy a little compact to go back and forth to work, since I'm lucky enough to be close to the Hotel.
Plenty to think about...

Pinching self...
One of the "dinosaurs" (as they call themselves in this specialty) saw my work from this summer's conference and sent me a reply in an e-mail recently where he/she said it was "exceptional". From the source, that IS a major compliment. It really made my day.
Wow.
Now back to reality...finished some yardwork that got derailed by hurricane remnants last week, went shopping and now getting ready to go out to a coworker's shindig to celebrate the end of summer (that got cancelled because of the rain, too.)
Back to the old grind soon enough...

Fun things to do on the weekend
1. Herd the dog and the kid out of the way. Why is it everyone hunkers down right near where I need to be?
2. Clean (since you've already herded the kid and dog in #1) Start by vacuuming. Hope the door stays locked and the kid stays interested in what he's doing in said locked room, so dog doesn't come out to attack the "invader" (aka the vacuum).
3. Keep kid and dog off freshly mopped floors until dry. Bribes work best (cookies for all--dog and kid). Just make sure kid knows not to feed dog the chocolate chip ones.
4. Start laundry before it becomes 150 degrees outside. Sure, I could dry it all outside, but the birds don't like me right now (see car for proof) and the clothesline I ordered is not in yet.
5. Finally, sit down, relax and enjoy that coffee...ahh!
The moments of the weekend won't last for long. Monday will be here in no time!
Stay tuned!

Mother's Day epilogue
My day:
Wonderful brunch with Dahey and Bubba, even if it was a tad cool outside. We had a nice afternoon stroll immediately following in the sunshine, playing by a fountain, which was a magnet for all of the little boys nearby.
The volunteers at work brought us stuff: fast food. Not sure why...no bingo games were going on last night. Just because, I guess.
One of our groups brought flowers for all of the nurses who were mothers and the chaplain corps handed them out while they were in the neighborhood for services. I told Dahey I didn't want flowers, but got some anyway. It was nice.
We celebrated amongst ourselves with a dessert cart...cake, ice cream, cookies and pie. That trolley and brunch played hell with my diet yesterday, but thankfully, it's only one day.
Back to the lions' den tonight, for more wild and crazy excitement. Stay tuned!

Ahh...sweetness!
The tang of the wheat beer and those darned barbecue potato chips...ahh!
I'm so glad it's Friday, I'm so glad it's Friday, I kept saying to myself today. I felt like I was constantly behind, even when I wasn't. Nevertheless, I made it through the day.
Lately, I've seen and felt a lot of emotions, as I've been running around the unit. Anger...that patient who just won't cooperate with his/her rehab goals. I finally capitulated to the coordinator, since the patient is stalling and just taking out frustrations on yours truly. The psych people took another tack...put the ball in his/her court and bring up discharge. Yes, this changed things some, but I still elected to work with another patient. It was hard to give up, but I felt in the interest of everyone, it made sense. So did the coordinator, which worked for me.
Anticipation...I'm getting ready for upcoming conferences and vacations. It's such a pleasant thought to think that in mere weeks, I'll be having fun outside the Hotel Rehab. I also got out of the GRE when I found out my grad program no longer requires it. I got my application in to the program just in the nick of time, so we'll see if I get accepted.
Excitement...Yesterday, I went to a training session on using our medication administration system. No one else showed up when I went, so basically, I had the person in charge all to myself for about an hour. It was great. I hope to someday end up in that department, and I got a whole lot of face time and plenty of information to boot...and a reference.
Outside of the emotions, there's always the physical aspect of the job. A whole lot of heaving and ho-ing. I had two patients that got up all three days. Neither of these two patients are lightweights (180+ lbs.). I did get both of them to help me. Almost all of our lifts have buttons on cords, so I could give them the cords to put themselves down in the chair as I pulled them into place with the handles on the sling. This was wonderful...and kept them busy. They got a charge out of having some control on how they transferred from their bed to the wheelchair.
I could kvetch and moan about the craziness some of the night folks left me with...full hampers, full urine bags and totally fsked up IVs, but I won't. I am celebrating the weekend. It won't be here forever, so I'm going to enjoy it, snow or no snow. I hope you do, too, wherever you are.
More to come...
