The fascinating human body

I have always loved anatomy. So many parts to a human and the things they can do! I saw this infographic recently on how cadavers are used to help people with reconstructive surgeries.

I heard about this story on the way to work the other day. Not sure who or what the radio folks were reading, but after a search, I found this blog post from the Mayo Clinic. Transplant patients in this article got better lung function playing the harmonica. There was also another article I found about a guy who created a therapeutic harmonica (that always sounds good) called the Pulmonica. Sounds like a novel way to get people to actually do some exercises (since few ever like that incentive spirometer anyway).

Hope you enjoy! Who knows...you could have a bluegrass musician on your unit before you know it.

Bubba in public health?

Who knows?

As I had correctly guessed, there was no call from the teacher, etc., because Bubba decided to show off the infamous teen book at the end of the day. Apparently, it sat on his desk all day, untouched.

He decided to show a friend one of the drawings. There really aren't that many in the book, but there is one that shows a circumcised penis and an uncircumcised one and the changes in puberty.

He was written up and had to spend two hours in the Principal's office doing work. His offense: "Not respecting other's body parts". Even if the "other" was a book illustration. (The boys pointed at the drawing and laughed.)

Ah, growing up is full of all sorts of adventures.

More to come...

It's almost like Christmas

When you actually clean out that closet in the office that was bursting at the seams. Here are a few of my finds in there today on my day off (I know, I just know how to have fun...)

  • acceptance letter to nursing school
  • computer tools I'd thought someone had taken
  • a computer part I needed for Dahey (the one I bought at the dollar store broke in a week)
  • my old laptop and other oddball computer parts
  • wallet with my student ID from 2001
  • and $6 cash
I didn't get everything done, but it was a success for me. And just about as good as Christmas.

More to come...the semester's slowly finishing. Another paper is nearly done.

Oh, the irony...

I'm not sure why, but things keep coming out of the woodwork...

Did you know some medical devices require a certain number of parts? Without those essential parts, which may cost thousands of dollars, they are essentially useless? I found this out today when I was talking to the salesman who sold the SU a device. The administrator was distinctly not happy when I told him what may be occurring. Just imagine explaining this to the big boss.... "that machine I told you was $5k, well, it needs "brains" and they're another 10k."

The unit secretary just "forgets" to do things you ask her to do. Things that just happen to be her job. Oh, I needed so much more than coffee this morning. I needed a drink!

Happily, most of the work got done that I needed today. I'm just crossing my fingers that the rest gets done tomorrow.

We'll see....more to come.
