Your sense of smell

Some things just stink. Your favorite team doesn't win a football, baseball or soccer game.

However these recent news stories had me wondering where the bad odors could be coming from.

Think the litter box needs emptying? Maybe it's just your laptop according to Dell. (courtesy of the BBC)

Can the smell of the famous "rooster sauce" (aka sriracha) cause headaches? Some people think so. (from the LA Times).

And you thought things were rough listening to Grandma's Lawrence Welk. Those darned Somali pirates can't handle this woman's music. (from www.military.com --thanks to my astute active duty brother-in-law).

Enjoy! More to come...

Sometimes

I wonder about my faith in humanity when I see the world around me. Idiots and criminals get me rattled.

But today, I have flashbacks to my former lives.

JJ, one of our tech folks, took good care of one of my doctors, when her laptop when crazy.

His cohort, who made various sexist remarks when I brought the laptop over yesterday, had me wishing I had a beer bottle. (One, to drink and two, to smash over his head for his callousness.) Too bad it's verboten on our property and two, I'd have a hard time justifying giving him a beer bottle headache.

All in all, after a nice chat with my new manager, I think the Hotel may get where we need it to be.

Cross your fingers (toes, and other appendages) because I will be too.

More later.

It's almost like Christmas

When you actually clean out that closet in the office that was bursting at the seams. Here are a few of my finds in there today on my day off (I know, I just know how to have fun...)

  • acceptance letter to nursing school
  • computer tools I'd thought someone had taken
  • a computer part I needed for Dahey (the one I bought at the dollar store broke in a week)
  • my old laptop and other oddball computer parts
  • wallet with my student ID from 2001
  • and $6 cash
I didn't get everything done, but it was a success for me. And just about as good as Christmas.

More to come...the semester's slowly finishing. Another paper is nearly done.

Out and about

And listening to this album on my laptop on this windy, cool fall day.

Hope your day is equally exciting...stay tuned. My maiden voyage is coming!

In case you're wondering...

Dear Nosy Coworkers:

Yes, I did already talk to the boss about leaving early today. Maybe you should have too, since you like to observe (loudly) that I'm "always getting off for something." Reminds me of the verse, "Seek and you shall find..."

I did earn my kudos for that project I'm working on...remember you didn't want it when it was offered to you, because it was "too much work."

No, I don't mind doing whatever it takes to keep my people happy. I will turn on the computer and set it up for the quad, since it's his/her only link to the outside world via that laptop. Yes, taking care of people and their stuff really IS nursing. Hopefully, if you're ever in a similar situation someone will do the same for you.

And finally, if someone can have a cold Diet Coke on the rocks in a room that's steaming, you'd better believe they're getting it from me.

That is all.

Lift, load, upload and loaf

Happy Monday from the land of ahhs! Ah! I turned in that paper I was working on this weekend, in between loading up my iTunes on this laptop. I just never got around to it a month ago because school started and I had other technical issues to resolve.

Now I've got a lot of very wonderful stuff from ABBA to Van Halen to Vladimir Horowitz. Dahey has a huge collection of all sorts of stuff, so I'm just loading up, including the Christmas music (can't find any Hannukah or other holiday stuff anywhere right now.)

The loading happened earlier today when I went in the storage area and started taking out all the stuff I triaged and set aside to give to charity. Loaded up the battle wagon twice and got a good chunk done today. Put some big items up for sale, so we'll see how that goes.

The loafing...a nice, uninterrupted bath and a book. It didn't last too long, but it was nice.

More to come...stay tuned!

Get up and go Monday

I managed to get up and go, even if I felt a little slow. So did a couple of our patients.

Our first admission was on site when I arrived around 0715. This is highly unusual, but this patient came from home and was not picked up, so this added another element of excitement to my day when I went into report and I found out that I'd be the admitting nurse.

Happily, I got my assessment and some paperwork out of the way before I started getting my other two patients ready. One of the volunteers set up one of my patients and he got ready and I didn't have to do too much.

I got him ready and up in his chair, and away I went to the next patient. The next guy was a little perturbed that he had to wait for the docs, but that's what happens sometimes when they're rounding and talking. Better late than never to therapy!

The rest of the day went reasonably well, and I even got to eat my lunch by 1330. I got my patient to therapy for all of the afternoon session. He went back to bed and watched a movie on his laptop, which thoroughly entranced his roommate, who had never seen a DVD before.

It was all good, even if I escaped a couple of minutes late. More fun tomorrow...we'll see how crazy the weather is! Stay tuned!
