If you have e-mail, it just might get hacked if you open attachments you shouldn't. I'm so glad one of my technical people actually confirmed my suspicions recently. Our mail has been terrible. The issues we have with technology are scary, but not surprising.
My latest issue: some of my coworkers want to be exempt from policies and procedures that can cause issues with billing some services they provide. This is another example of following the chain of command. They do it (or suggest it) so I have to make their boss aware of the situation. It sucks, frankly, when these same folks could have been doing this job (they've been dodging) for a few years now, had they let me put the resources in place.
More construction starts at the Hotel. We got some equipment (they forgot until I asked and money was found) for our exam room, so once we get our security devices (probably next month) we can officially say construction is over in our office.
Bye, bye convenient parking when the monsoon comes through later this week. Guess I may actually start wearing my backup scrubs. Our parking lot shuttle is a joke. I often see them at the local Wal-mart. Last time I checked, Wal-mart was not our parking lot.
Patients will be patients. They are now asking pointed questions and so it makes our lives very interesting everyday.
Off I go to another exciting day. Stay tuned.

Ah, memories!
I was reading online and found a link to these NCLEX questions. The scenarios are the "what would you do" management ones. I love those.
For fun I decided to read them, and see how they'd be answered at the Hotel. The selected questions are located at this link: http://www.rnpedia.com/practice-exams/nclex-exam/nclex-practice-exam-management-care
Here's what would happen (or has happened) at the Hotel for the ones I selected. See if your place of employment is the same.
Remember nursing students: you have to answer as if you work at NCLEX Hospital, not at the Hotel or your current hospital. Your mileage may vary, but you'll get the answer right.
1. RE: substance abuse/unfit to work We've had our share of people who shouldn't come to work for a number of reasons. Frankly, I'm all about sending them home if they don't need to be there. Unfortunately, some of my coworkers, do not feel the same way, and contribute to everyone else doing double work so someone else isn't "found out".
Can you say "dysfunctional family"? I knew you could.
7. RE: abuse complaints. Please, please, please don't call the police FIRST, young'uns. I've seen this one in person and the manager ended up leaving and one of our students was basically run off the unit, because he/she did not use common sense.
Assess, mitigate, and notify your chain of command first.
8. RE: dates and patients. Yes, I do tell them it's inappropriate to ask me, a married woman, out on a date, psych or not. I'm here doing a job, which does not include interviewing the next Bachelor/Bachelorette candidates.
9. RE: client calling out asking for help all the time. This is great information, but good luck implementing it, if you don't have a cooperative crew. I remember many a night when some of my evening characters constantly badgered me (and often the rest of the staff) no matter what I told them.
Just remember: dementia and sundowner folks will keep you hopping on evening shift, kids. Don't forget: evenings do get quiet and dark, and that's when things like to fall apart.
11. RE: the surgeon and the chart. Remember: just say no. If he's on your facility medical provider list, he can look for himself. If he chooses to do so (which violates hospital policy in a great many places), it will be logged and he'll have some 'splainin' to do as Ricky Ricardo used to say.
15. RE: visiting hours. Here again, is another example of using common sense. If your family is quiet, calm and respectful, it makes this easier. Model it and they'll do it, too.
Don't be a Nurse Ratched. Taking care of the patient and his/her family (and well-being) really IS your job, no matter when visiting hours are.

Biennial joy
Yes, I've been looking for this for a while: the infamous renewal mail from the RehabLand State Board of Nursing.
The last renewal period, the Manglement at the Hotel thought it would be nice to terrorize anyone who did not renew in advance (meaning the second it was mailed out). One of my coworkers got a nastygram from the CNO stating, "Your employment can be terminated if this is not renewed one month early per the Hotel police."
Oh, really? You want to terminate hardworking nurses because they did not renew their license FAR ahead of time? Thankfully, said CNO has retired and hopefully, is enjoying the sunsets somewhere else, far, far away (and gets sand kicked in his/her face from time to time).
Even with online renewal (which is LOVELY), please folks, take your time filling these out. They have some serious questions (including some new ones below). If the answer to any is YES, you cannot fill them out online. (So glad I'm a no!)
Since you last renewed, have you ever been convicted, adjudged guilty by a court, pled guilty, pled nolo contendere or entered an alford plea to any traffic offense resulting from or related to the use of drugs or alcohol, whether or not sentence was imposed? (this includes a disposition of a suspended imposition of sentence (SIS), suspended execution of sentence (SES), or placement in a post plea alternative or diversion court and includes municipal charges of driving while intoxicated, driving under the influence and/or driving with excessive blood alcohol content.)
Yes No
Moral of the story: Drinking then driving can cause issues with your license for years.
Since you last renewed, have you had a judgment rendered against you based upon fraud, misrepresentation, deception, or malpractice related to your practice as a nurse?
Yes No
Moral of the story: Don't steal, lie, cheat or commit any other fraud. Leave the pyramid schemes to someone else. You don't have time for that.
NEW! Are you listed on any state or federal sexual offender list? (they thought this up after a few issues)
Yes No
Moral of the story: Yes, we have to ask, and yes, it can be a problem. Just another thing not to do as a nurse
By checking the following box, I declare that all statements or representations submitted with this application are made under oath or affirmation and are true and correct to my best knowledge under penalty of section XXX which specifies that anyone who makes a false statement in writing with intent to mislead a public official in the performance of his official duties is guilty of a class B misdemeanor.
Select this box if you agree to ALL the above statements and have answered all questions that were presented.
Moral of the story: If you don't, you have some explaining to do...on paper via mail.
I'm so glad I'm done. Happy renewing!

Follow your arrow
We talk a lot about how we work together as a team, but sometimes, it seems like we miss the point.
I have had to work with Manglement to bring nurses into the Hotel. One manager has retooled all the interview questions (yes, we use them for a number of reasons) to ask questions about the team.
One nurse wanted to transfer from one unit to another. No dice because this nurse has had an issue with the hiring manager in the past. We also had other unsuitable candidates. Why? Because some of them just don't come prepared. They don't sell themselves. You give them time and they don't know how to do it!
So, if you're on a journey, and want to go somewhere new, follow your arrow. Learn along the way. Just because something fails once or twice, or even three to thirteen times, you will eventually get to success. Listen. Find mentors and read the signs along the way.
Enjoy your weekend wherever you may roam.

Can fat really kill you?
I had a patient ask me that very question in the hallway the other day. Yes, indeed, Mr. XYZ, it can.
You could get any of the following diseases:
1. Fatty liver disease is becoming a growing cause of liver transplants.
2. Yes, cholesterol can get you too.
3. And let's not forget diabetes, either.
Being fat and or predisposed to keeping fat on your body (some of this can be genetic, as noted in the article in #1) is dangerous.
And I made sure I documented my education note as soon as I got back to my desk.
There is never enough nursing education.
TGIF!

Mush
That's what my brain has felt like lately. Total. Utter. Mush.
What could do this you ask? Two things.
First, interminable meetings. One right after the other. Trapping you in a room with closed blinds and crazy weather after a week of freedom should be against the law.
Second, I also got to interview people. For my old unit and the SU. It's so nice to feel wanted...until they tell you that you'll be trapped in a room for that, too. Filling out papers. Lots of papers.
An aside (or rant ..WARNING):
If I told you we were required to ask these kinds of questions, would you come to the interview unprepared? About 25% of the people came in not knowing (or caring). Consequently, it was easier for me to give a lower rating on the interview.
Some folks didn't pay attention to dress, either. Scrubs are not unusual for nurses if the person just came from work, but they should be clean and neat. If they are not, they are not appropriate.
Dress was the least of the worries, though. Some people just couldn't answer the questions. The best person I interviewed was one where my supervisor kept saying, "Feel free to elaborate" as the candidate basically answered the behavioral questions with yes and no. It made me wonder if they had just gotten off the night shift (the candidate never volunteered that information, though).
Needless to say, they declined to offer said candidate a position due to poor performance.
Remember folks, I don't know what you do. The interview is where you tell me what you do and why I should hire you.
Ah, another week ahead, but thankfully, without any interviews.
Stay tuned!

Ask me...
That's what this week's version is called at Sunday Stealing. Enjoy!
The ASK Meme, part one
What’s your favorite candle scent?
Vanilla
Do you know a hoarder?
Yes. Dahey is one.
Can you do a split?
Regular = no. Chinese = back in the day I could!
How old were you when you learned how to ride a bike?
Six
How many oceans have you swam in?
None. Have waded into two.
How many countries have you been to?
Six.
Is anyone in your family in the military?
Yes.
What’s the worst grade you got on a test?
I've flunked a few tests. (I have always passed the classes, though.)
What was your favorite TV show when you were a child?
Emergency.
What did you dress up as on Halloween when you were eight?
Don't remember. Went as a hobo more years than I can count.
Have you read any of the Harry Potter, Hunger Games or Twilight series?
No.
Would you rather have an American accent or a British accent?
I am fine with my accent (American) thank you very much.
Do you know who Kermit the frog is?
Yes...why are there so many songs about rainbows? And now that you have that song in your head, see the bottom of this page.
What language, besides your native language, would you like to be fluent in?
Chinese
Do you spell the color as grey or gray?
Depends. Earl Grey tea and a gray sweater are fine and dandy, as my old sales manager used to say.
Is your father bald?
Nope.

It's back again since it's Sunday
This one is various questions from today's version here:
What would you choose to be famous for?
I would like to be a famous philanthropist. Since my chances right now are slim to none, I'll take the Nurse of the Year in the HotelRehab group.
If you have a webcam, are you ever paranoid people can see you?
I turn mine off and block the view. That's all I'm saying. I'm very opinionated about this. Don't get me started!
Do you find it difficult to sleep at night? Any reason(s) why?
Yes, my husband often steals my covers.
If you had to go on a game show, which would you choose?
Jeopardy.
What about if you had to go on a reality show?
I would not do a reality show. Just don't like them.
Which would you choose then?
See above.
Tell me about your favorite TV show:
I love the news...always different.
Why were you last irritated?
Driving gets me going some days. I'm glad I had a good day, today.
What time did you get up this morning?
0545. My body clock says that's sleeping in on weekends.
Do you like the countryside?
Yes, in winter.
Do you think you’d make a good model?
Depends on what you want me to model. I'd make a dandy scrubs model.
Would you ever want to be one?
Not really,
How often do you change your hairstyle?
I mix it up every so often. No idea how often. Sometimes it's the cut, other times, color.
Do you have a favorite day of the week? Which is it?
Sunday. Of course!

Today's Sunday stealing
Ahh, the fun of random questions. I answered a few of the bunch here this weekend.
Enjoy your day wherever you are!
What was the last thing you watched on television?
The news. Yes, I'm boring. And sports. (My kid is an ESPN junkie).
How old will you be in 12 months?
Really old...40 something.
Do you sleep naked?
Every once in a while.
Have you ever held hands with someone in a car?
Yes, all the time. I'm old fashioned.
Could you go the rest of your life without smoking a cigarette?
Yes, I have so far...so I'm keeping up my streak.
What do you say during awkward silences?
I learned to count to 10, then breathe.
When will you next see the last person you texted?
Probably Monday. I text our technical staff at work all the time because the cell signal in my building is wacky.
Honestly, when is the last time you have been to Texas?
2010 for a conference and to see some friends. Can't wait to go back for another conference, hopefully next year in big D where my high school friend now lives. We try to meet whenever we're in each other's neck of the woods, although, I made her drive to San Antonio last time.

The latest Sunday Stealing
Here's the latest from Sunday Stealing called Collapse. Enjoy!
Have you ever clicked on an ad on the side of your screen by accident?
Of course (they put the links in the darnedest places!)
When was the last time you were disappointed?
Hmm. Happens regularly, but I don't count.
Do you like the smell of rain?
Yes. Especially in summer.
What was the last thing you took a picture of?
My child Bubba.
When you go to McDonald's, what drink do you usually get?
Depends. I usually drink water wherever I go.
What's the nickname of your home state?
Can't tell, but some people find it annoying.
What's the worst type of weather in your opinion?
Any extremes. I love it when it's about 60-65 degrees and partly cloudy to sunny.
Do you have a Kindle, Nook, iPad or none?
iPad.
Would you rather read or write?
Writing is my choice, but I love reading, too.
When was the last time someone took a picture of you?
Yesterday.
Do you own a pair of slippers?
Technically, yes. Let's just call them house shoes. I wear them around the house, including going outside in them. I think of slippers as fluffy and can't handle concrete or grass.
Is your house currently hot, cold or just right?
Just right. I love programmable thermostats!
Is there a Dead End road near where you live?
Yes. A few.
Do you roll your eyes often?
Not really. That drives me nuts!
Growing up, did you see your cousins often?
Fairly often.
Where was your first job at?
I was a church secretary.
Is life a party to you?
Mostly, when it's not work.
Who are you tired of seeing in the news a lot?
Just depends on the day. Kimye is way up there on my list, and all the related stories. Don't even get me started...
When was the last time you flew a kite?
How long have you had a blog?
Forever. Officially, I've had one since Blogger started.
Have you ever had to call and complain about a product you bought?
Yes, but social media is so much more effective now...and it works!
Name something positive you love about yourself.
I am positive the majority of the time.

Sunday stealing, just for you, dads
I'm not exactly sure if this is truly the Father's Day edition, but I'm posting my answers below today for a selection of the questions.
Bubba was the pancake master for breakfast, and so far, our day has gone really well. Dahey liked all of his gifts.
Enjoy your Father's Day wherever you are!
What is your ring size?
Depends on which hand. One ring finger is an 8. My mother told me not to crack my knuckles, but I didn't listen...
How often do you wear jewelry?
I'm not an accessory freak, but I wear "work-appropriate" jewelry every day.
When was the last time you consumed alcohol?
Last weekend.
What is your favorite comfort food?
It depends. I love bread (my greatest loss while on this low carb diet) and anything bread-like.
Do you prefer broccoli or asparagus?
Asparagus would be first.
What color are your bedroom walls?
I think the color is called "linen" (basically a white color, chosen by my husband).
With whom do you live?
Dahey, Bubba and WildDog. We have visitors occasionally, but none lately. Dahey's got a couple of coworkers and a couple of cousins who've lived with us at one time or another.
Which Star Wars movie is your favorite?
Return of the Jedi. I'm old school.
How about Harry Potter?
Don't really have one.
What was the last movie you saw in theaters?
Probably Paranorman.
Did you get the popcorn or candy?
Always candy. I'm a Sno-caps kind of girl (if it's chocolate, I get it).
Have you ever played miniature golf on a date?
Yes. Over and over and over. Not a lot to do for teens on dates when I was growing up.
Do you always use good grammar?
I try.
Do you have an accent or a speech impediment?
I have been told I have an accent, based on the region of the country I'm from. I'm often mistaken for a Canadian. (You know, eh?)
What did you eat today?
Breakfast omelette. I really wanted lots of pancakes, but I didn't make those low carb ones.
Do you prefer to watch or play sports?
Play, definitely. If it's pro, I'll watch.
What size engine is in your vehicle?
Depends: one four, one six cylinder.
What do you need to do tomorrow?
Get up and go to work (ugh!)

Sunday silliness
Ah, the joys of bubble wrap. If only I really could do this, I'd take some to work tomorrow.
So if you don't have any on hand, don't fret. Virtual bubble wrap has been online for ages! (thank goodness!) The wonderful folks there even have an Android app and a desktop version for all of you looking for some therapeutic communication tools to use at home (check with your local IT folks if you want to try this in the break room at your hospital 'cause it may be verboten!)
If none of those are nearly annoying enough, check out the Insane version (and crank your speakers). Need help? Check out this video from CBS earlier this year about a world record bubble wrap session.
If all that bubble wrap popping doesn't work, check out Sunday Stealing's Three Wishes meme. Here are some of my answers below. Enjoy your day and your week wherever you are!
What is your dream career? Philanthropist with a flexible schedule.
If you had a dragon what would you name it? Angus (seems like a good dragon name) or something Slavic and about 9-12 letters long, like Bronislav.
What do you put on hot dogs? Ketchup, mustard and relish.
What's your favorite way to get inspired? Roam aimlessly, walking around or driving in my car listening to music.
If you could go back in time would you and why? There are so many places I'd want to go. I'd want to meet relatives who died when I was young or before I was born. I'd like to meet my parents as teenagers, and I'd like to see some friends again when they were younger (before I knew them). I'd also love to go back to the Hotel in the old days, to see what a "new" rehab hospital was like.
Would you rather be rich or healthy? I've tried healthy (reasonably speaking) so I'd like to try stinking rich, but, if I got that philanthropy job, I'd probably already be rich (or at least get paid to give away money to good causes, which would be a lot of fun.)

Sunday stealing...
Yes, that's right. It's been a LONG time since I wandered over to this blog, so I figured I'd throw my hat in the ring and answer some of those burning questions. (only burning if I forgot to turn off the stove...)
Here they are...enjoy the weekend while you can (what's left). I'll be ironing.
Sunday Stealing: The Meme From Suburbia

Sometimes, I wonder
We're up for a big inspection soon and the Big Boss has an all-hands meeting.
He/she basically says, "Well, it probably won't be good." and doesn't tell us much anything else. WT...?
Thankfully, we have enough people who've been around long enough that they asked good questions and got more information out him/her. It was not very promising.
Yes, he/she hasn't been at the Hotel forever, but you'd think he/she might learn a few tips on how to be not only a good, but better leader.
I'm just gonna cross my fingers and pray...stay tuned.

You just never know...
One day, I ask a crazy question, get an answer, submit the details for a national conference, and voila! I'm on stage at one of the largest rehab conferences in the US with my boss.
Today, it's a Monday and I decide I need to do a little investigating about saving the department some money. I was talking to one of our docs about "what would you do" to save money. He/she tells me, and along with some guidance from our department NPs (patients would love it, they said), I write up a quickie proposal and ask the big boss if it would work.
By the end of the day, the chief of medicine has added it to the hospital's task force to investigate.
If all goes well, our unit could save our hospital big, big bucks.
Yes, indeed, it is a happy Monday.
Stay tuned...

I have always enjoyed the stolen memes on Sunday Stealing, and since it's Sunday, here's one of my recent favorites, in memory of a blogger's recently deceased husband.

24. What's you're favorite lyric quote from a song?
Gee, there are so many..."Life is a cabaret, old chum." sometimes really sums up my life though (lots of acting, dancing and singing).
25. Tell us something random about yourself.
I love spinach, even though my stomach does not.
26. Have ever attended a theme party? If yes, do tell.
80s parties, 60s parties, dress as your favorite teacher parties, you name it. My friends liked themes to see who would get dressed outrageously so we could take photos for blackmail purposes. Now, everyone's old and rarely goes all out anymore.
27. What is your favorite thing about winter?
I love snow, particularly when I have to stay home. I love to watch it snow at night by streetlight.
28. What was the name of your first pet?
Louis, a lizard.
29. What have you done so far this weekend?
Worked, got homework ready, went out to eat three times.
30. Has your humor ever been called “sick”?
Yes, I've gotten more skilled since I became a nurse.
31. If you could have one thing, what would it be?
Right now: an antacid; forever: peace with a side of contentment.
Bless me Father, 'cause here's Sunday Stealing...
Sunday Stealing: The 31 Meme, Part Two: In Memory of Clyde
Cheers to all of us thieves!
16. What's the longest shift that you worked at a job?
15 hours, although, I do have nightmares that I will be trapped at work due to a natural disaster, just like my coworker, J., who got caught at work for days just after Hurricane Ike.
17. What was the last concert that you attended?
An international one...local African group. Very cool
18. What the last DVD (or Blu Ray, of course) movie that you watched?
Haven't watched TV in ages...
19. How did you like the film?
n/a
20. What comedian do you love?
It really depends. I don't have a favorite.
21. Do you ever sleep in the nude?
I have been known to do so on occasion...when the really good sheets are on my bed!
22. Have you ever had a long distance relationship?
Tried for 6 short weeks as a college freshman and he dumped me, only to come back about a year later. No dice, pal!
23. What do you think of astrology?

In case you have an interview soon...
One of our regular readers has an interview with a SNF coming up, so I thought I'd put on the career hat and start a list of interviewing tips. Feel free to jump on in the comments section and add your $0.02.
Interviewing for a nursing job is not unlike interviewing for any other job, so keep the following in mind.
RehabRN's 10 interviewing commandments
1. Show up on time. Be nice to the receptionist/secretary/clerk. Some of them do make hiring decisions in one way or another.
2. Do not bring your cell phone. If you have to, turn it off. Do not make or take phone calls in your interview. It is considered rude.
3. Dress appropriately. Business attire is not bad, nor is leaning on the conservative side. You can save the bright pink shoes for when you have the job.
4. Practice your speech in your head before you go in. You'll have to introduce yourself, so make sure you can do that with a firm handshake. You may interview with one or multiple people, so make appropriate eye contact with each person.
5. Bring a portfolio with notebook and take notes. You'll need these notes to ask questions at the end. Be sure to note the name of the interviewer and any other people you may talk to during your interview.
6. Have an additional copy of your resume and any important documents (i.e. license, BLS info, etc.) with you.
7. Pay attention. If you don't understand something, ask the person to repeat it. Maintain appropriate eye contact and actively listen.
8. Sit up straight and do not slouch. Posture is important in communicating that you're paying attention, just like your second grade teacher said.
9. Answer the questions posed by the interviewer after you count to 5 or 10, even if you already know what you're going to say. This helps you to keep calm and appear poised and thoughtful. If you don't understand something, tell the interviewer.
10. Finally, once all the questions are done, thank the interviewer and any other staff who may have participated in your interview.
Be certain to follow up with a personalized thank you note (to one or all of the people who interviewed you), using those notes you took during the interview and make sure to ask for the job. You can send them via regular mail or e-mail.
DO NOT blow off a thank you note...it may be the difference between hiring you and someone else.
An example:
Dear Nurse Manager:
Thanks so much for meeting with me today. I'm really impressed by ABC SNF and I'd really appreciate an opportunity to use my RN/LPN/CNA skills to work with your residents.
Please contact me at xxx-xxxx (NOTE: you can use e-mail also if you'd like here) if you have any other questions.
Sincerely,
Random Nurse
