The bracing chill

Winter's hanging on here in RehabLand. I took a walk tonight in the brisk air after dinner. Glad I had on many layers and a good hat to cover my ears.

Work is still work, but at least, I'm rousing the troops. Things I've been trying to accomplish are finally falling into place. Even without a lot of executive buy-in, we're getting things done. It's going to change the dynamics of what we do in many ways.

I had a interview recently for a new job. It'll mean leaving the Hotel, but staying in the same hospital system. It really stressed me out (because I was a half hour early), but I was happy when I got it done. I know there were a lot of applicants. I just hope I'll be the one who gets it. I've passed up on a job like this twice before.

I'm hoping third time's the charm. Cross your fingers, light your candles, etc.

Stay tuned...

The joys of spring

RehabLand had a very long winter. Finally, spring came on March 21. Daffodils are popping up and the trees have buds.

Now, we're experiencing the not-so-hot stuff. Hail. Yesterday, it was golfball-sized near the Hotel, but thankfully, miniscule at the Hotel.

With almost 6 inches of rain in the last two days, there are lots of puddles that look like small lakes. Flash flooding really is not like a flash mob, folks.

And if that wasn't enough, here come the tornado warnings.

Let's just hope the power stays on...more later.

A sign of the times

The weather here in RehabLand is cold, cloudy and rainy. The birds are still singing.

Great day to roll over and go back to sleep.

Enjoy your weekend wherever you are.

Brrr!

It's freaking cold as one of my young hip patients says. This is the same guy who was rolling around in a very huge jacket and asked me if he had any wrinkles.

"No," I told him, "No wrinkles, but are you doing the gangsta look?" (He likes to look hip, even if he is in a wheelchair.

Hipster Dude of course said no. He did have a good chuckle, though.

The snow and sleet are sticking around since it won't get above freezing for a few days.

The joys of winter...

Surprise!

I won a trip today!

The good news: it's far away. It occurs over a weekend, and I won't miss any work.

The bad news: it's gonna be a little cold.

I hope I can find my long underwear.

Stay tuned.

Baseball on the brain

Yes, it's not a nursing topic, but in these parts of RehabLand, you know when people have had enough of winter, because they start talking about spring training. It's on television, it's in the newspaper, it's the stuff of discussion on the unit amongst the locals. (The non-locals are all about football and basketball right now...)And even more so since two old ball players got their heavenly rewards this week: Stan Musial and Earl Weaver.

A few of our old timers talked about their memories: radio stories, pros buying an enlisted guy a drink on his birthday, harmonicas, confetti, and screaming matches. One old character told us about his friends from the Negro Leagues. This guy actually showed up to tell the story about how he always was the target of fights since he liked throwing pitches "high and tight".

Nothing like thoughts of spring to help ward off this winter chill. More later...

Temps are dropping...

And they are calling for snow. I guess winter really is around the corner!

Bubba is asleep early. I hope none of his classmates shared any special viruses they got during Thanksgiving.

More to come...

A special delight

The weather. Hey, it's cold, because winter  is really coming (barring no global warming) to RehabLand.

I ran around like crazy today filling in for a few folks AND doing my regular "yes, it's clinic day" and run all over the freaking place looking for patients and making copies.

But the special delight was a few of my patients. I had to do an two education sessions since today was the Great American Smokeout, I was worried during the second one when no one showed up.

I finally got two people --one clinic patient who watched my presentation just before his ride showed up and the other who I convinced to come in off the street following his therapy appointment.

Always a good day when people show up!

Stay tuned for more excitement in RehabLand...

Cold and snowy

Yes, as Phil predicted, winter is back in RehabLand. It's cold and snowy and I've been snuggled in reading and playing on the computer.

Sometimes, I like the news I read, but this article about shortages of vital drugs just makes my blood boil.

Back to reading...and hopefully relaxing. I'm not going anywhere right now!

Stay tuned...

You wanna go?

Some veterans who like snow will be hitting the slopes in Snowmass, CO for this year's Winter Sports Clinic.

And if you're in NY, you might appreciate this article about the senior centers in the city and throughout the state in today's NY Times.

Everyone NEEDS some place to go. Folks, remember even if you don't belong to one of these groups, you can always volunteer to help them out, or find a similar operation in your own neck of the woods.

Enjoy your day wherever you are!

Does this tell you something?

The fact the Manglement insisted on having a conference call about winter weather was not unusual.

The fact that the main agenda item was what it means to show up for "regularly scheduled work hours" is a whole, 'nother ballgame.

I guess if we did not have so many people call out during winter weather, the PHBs would not have to get all excited over everything.

The joys of winter

A new week is ready to begin and I see a mess coming on. Why, you ask?

The infamous Alberta Clipper will be sailing back to RehabLand and bringing more ice and snow with it. So tomorrow morning, I look forward to a bumper crop of phone calls to reschedule all the appointments for a good chunk of this week.

Spring will not get here soon enough.

Kids and snow

Who'd think a box full of Frosty could make a bunch of kids this excited? I would have never guessed that Frosty could even come close to making it on a long flight.
