I read this article recently, and realized I do this a lot. I am being a sadomasochist nurse trying to cram a whole bunch of stuff into my brain.
Thank goodness I can't lose the keys in the patient laundry hampers anymore. (Sorry for the mental picture, but it has happened to me inadvertently).
That is all. Happy Hump Day.

Another t-shirt moment
I love conferences, since you get to see people you haven't seen in ages and learn new stuff.
But I really hate it when you are so tired, you want to pass out, because you've been trapped in freezing cold rooms and staying up late.
Thank goodness I convinced the boss I need time to recoup (aka vacation). I might not be going anywhere, but being stationary, is a very good thing.
Stay tuned.

It's HOT!
Dear Summer:
I know it's not Labor Day yet, and the kids are back in school, but this 100+ degree temperature thing needs to go.
I finally got used to not freezing to death at the Hotel. Now my space is so cold I have to either 1) talk to patients in the hallway, if it's possible or 2) turn the air off and sweat while I talk to patients.
All this stuff about designing rooms for patients is nice, but once in a while, couldn't we get a universal design that works for EVERYONE?
I know I'll be waiting for the remodeling (that may never come) in my end of the Hotel. Here's hoping the HVAC folks can get it right.
Sincerely (only if you fix climate control),
RehabRN

What awaits...
I keep telling myself that when all this construction is over at the Hotel, things will get better.
Well, the construction (and power outages) still keeps messing up my rooms and the devices we use every day.
How many more days are left? I keep counting...

More fun with Sunday Stealing
Here's this week's meme: Random Randomness part 3. I omitted the ones I don't like, so go on over and see for yourselves.
1) What room are you in?
The kitchen
2) Can you solve a rubix cube?
No.
3) Are you psychic in any way?
Not exactly. Have I had some seriously funky dreams and premonitions? Yes.
5) What's your favorite color?
Blue
6) What's your lucky number?
7
7) Do you have any chores that should be done now?
Laundry (just finishing right now).
8) Did you have a cherished childhood teddy bear or other toy?
Several, but they got worn out or destroyed when my brother put them outside.
9) What was the last thing you bought from a vending machine?
Soda
11) How many pairs of shoes do you own?
Too many.
13) If you were a super hero what powers would you have?
I like the cloak of invisibility, time travel and teleporting.
17) What would you do if you won the lottery?
Depends on how much money I won. Anything under $10 million, keep on working until my financial adviser and I get a plan together.
Over $10 million, I'm so out of there tomorrow (sorry Hotel folks: no offense, it's not you). Then I would take a round the world trip over the course of three months, then decide what I want to do with myself before my one year anniversary.
I would enjoy being retired so I could spend more time working with the charities I like to support now volunteering. One of my coworkers had an idea to work with rehab patients I'd like to explore in more detail.
18) Would you like to build/design your own house?
Yes, wanna see the plans? Sorry, they're still in my head, but include a backup power supply and lots of energy efficient things, HEPA filtration, and a whole house vacuum system. (That's why I'd need to win the lottery!)
19) Which form of public transport do you prefer?
Streetcar.
21) Can you juggle?
Literally, yes (about three things); figuratively, all the time.

On the cusp
Drugs are not always necessary. Belief in recovery always is. ~Norman Cousins
New beginnings: the Hotel got some much needed rehabbing and the occupants (staff and patients) are overjoyed. Nothing like new stuff to make people happy. The SU got some upgrades and will get more as the remodeling goes on down the way.
The end of the odyssey: my sick relative is finally going home after a trip through one hospital (twice) and one nursing home. Problems can indeed by solved eventually if you have a nervy nurse who just keeps asking questions. (The nervy nurse would be me.)
The beginning of the end of the great grad school journey: I have my date at PublicU for my exams, now all I have to do is work on my paper and my slide show and I'll be done. Hard to believe I will be done in less than two months.
Back to work....more to come.

Nuggets for June 28
Here's today's installment of interesting items from my perusals on the internet. Enjoy!
On epidemiology (a/k/a My favorite bug)
The MRSA Bug (from Medscape Nurses blog)
How private is your curtain?
Not very if you work in a double or triple room, like I do at Madison. ERnursey talks about Patient Privacy in the ER. The British Journal of Nursing also has an abstract on the issue of patient privacy here. Another article talks about noise shielding curtains, but I have yet to see any more literature about their use.
Non-formulary (a/k/a Stuff you can't have)
On the alternative medicine front, you may enjoy two unusual posts at Hell on White Clogs for June 25 and 26. The best (or most hilarious): an order for shots (not SQ or IM) and a patient dunning letter.
