Total, utter shock

Hospital workers frequent Facebook during free time, says study

Okay. Yes, this does describe some of my coworkers at the Hotel to a tee, but what about shopping, travel planning and other mindless things they do in the middle of the day when they should be working?

Alas, these were limitations of this study.

Stay tuned.

Summer officially begins...

Now I know it's really summer, because I finally broke down and got my toes painted an outrageous color.

Pompeii Purple is not really purple, but has an interesting pearly sheen.

That is all.

Back to meeting prep...more to come.

Complaining pays off

While Dahey, Bubba and I were on our vacation, we stayed in a large hotel chain. Said chain mentioned that unless you were completely satisfied, you would get a refund.

Well after some missing equipment and a prank late at night (which evacuated the entire hotel), I complained.
I got my note today that my stay was credited to my credit card.

Wow! That was a nice surprise. Will have to b%t&h more often!

More later...

Dear Door to Door Salesman

When Dahey told you to stay away from our house, he meant it. While it's a little rural out here, we're close enough to the big city that we've seen your racket already. You come to the door with the guise of selling stuff when, in reality, you're just trying to figure out what we have so you can steal it.

So it's not a good idea to come back when this nurse is at home with WildDog, Dahey just had dental work and feels like pummeling someone into the ground because the Novocaine is wearing off.

When WildDog barks that nasty, snarling bark, he's really saying, "Please leave now." When Dahey says, "Get the hell off my porch", he's saying the same thing.

Yours truly doesn't say much. I'm more than happy to whip out the phone, take your photo, and call the local police with a description of you and your getaway vehicle.

Because we really, really, told you no once, and it wasn't good enough.

Stay tuned...

Back to work...

It's like deja-vu, all over again.~ Yogi Berra

Yes, going back to work after escaping from the Hotel sure is like deja-vu. Today was a crazy, hair on fire kind of day. And tomorrow will be much of the same.

Wonder how fast Friday will get here...or my next vacation.

Will be counting the days. More updates to come.

Rehab nurses sure know it!

While I'm resting on my break (i.e. meaning I'm done with heavy lifting for a few minutes), I noticed an interesting e-mail.

I like to tell the nursing students who come to our unit at the Hotel that rehab nursing is really about bowel, bladder and skin (the physiological part).

Needless to say, I'm glad I was done drinking my Hefeweizen when I got this e-mail:

Vacation is a lot of work

Enough said. I'll be ready for another vacation after this one.

Doing junk around the house is so much fun.

Will to die

When you've lived 92 full years, sometimes you know when it's time to call it quits. You lived a life as a sometimes opinionated spitfire who loved her wine and chocolate, a big sister and a matriarch of a family of a brood of kids with a husband you dearly loved. You loved him so much, you even learned to play golf...and met a whole other group of friends.

You apprenticed in the second story of the flat you grew up in because that's what everyone in your family did. My father always said since your mama did everything, "you had to apprentice to learn how to be a wife." That was okay, because your husband didn't mind at all.

But you were really responsible for a lot more than just the kids. You were one of the founding families in the local neighborhood and help to found a church. You held parties where your and your husband's family had a grand old time, with butchers, bricklayers, and salesmen among them. Everyone on the block (and even farther) remembered those parties, with food and fun. You played yenta and even threw a few engagement parties in the finished basement everyone in the neighborhood came to know. You are one of the folks responsible for me being here, since my parents met at one of those neighborhood parties in your basement so many years ago.

You enjoyed the kids, the grand kids, and the great-grand kids. In your family's culture from the old country, any kid was worthy of spoiling with candy and lots of hugs and kisses. And the grandmother-less kids got even more hugs and kisses and candy for the road. Bubba was tearing up today when folks were talking about you.

I will miss you Aunt Stella. You were so much to me: my father's aunt, my great aunt, Bubba's great-great aunt and his unofficial grandma.

Godspeed Aunt Stella. I know one day you'll "just tell me something" again.  I really hope it's "Welcome, home."

Can't seem to get my mind off of you...

Will be in and out. Enjoy all wherever you roam!

Dear Doofus IT Guy

Yes, I called your boss. After not one, not two, but three documented instances where I've needed technology services, you couldn't come through. Technology that doesn't work in direct patient care is a bad thing.

You screw up badly enough that you need your coworkers to clean up after you. And believe you me, they are just as pissed off as I am.

I'm not asking for anything unusual. I'm asking that you meet a minimum standard. I want you to communicate in a timely manner and if you can't solve my issue, let your coworkers do it. Closing my helpdesk work order and saying it's all fine and dandy is not enough.

Your coworkers (and the Hotel patients) deserve better. Hope you enjoy those remedial classes.

Sincerely not,

RehabRN

Best quote on genetic medicine

In a very long time...

"Unfortunately there’s no genetic test to see if you are predisposed to being an asshole either. "
Thanks so much jo (Head Nurse) for your link to Boooo Cancer you  suck.
Guess the rest of us will just have to wait for an  a8%hole cure.

Ah, paradise

Just when I thought the Hotel had some of the most delusional folks in the world, I came upon Amy from Amy's Baking Company (thanks to HuffPost).

Thanking my lucky stars that she doesn't work with me.

We could use  a hospital version of Gordon, though.

Nuggets for May 15

The Ides of May...whoops, wrong month.

Yes, it's May 15, and a hot one here indeed in RehabLand. Here are a few of the news stories I've encountered during my drive time and surfing around on the internet this week.

The shoes make the man (or woman)
If you are a soccer player, you may want to pay attention when you purchase shoes according to this recent article in the New York Times, entitled Sports injuries and athletic shoes.

Something you just don't want (or what I heard on the drive today)
West Nile virus was very deadly in 2012, and the bug folks are predicting a banner year here in RehabLand, due to the weather conditions.

iPhone secret features
More than a few goodies I didn't know about here at appstorm, so if you own an iPhone, check it out.

Budget travel tips
Since Dahey and Bubba think we've won the lottery sometimes when we're on vacation, here are a few money-saving tips from MoneyNing for those vacations you may be taking this summer (assuming your boss will let you go).

A helluva story

Maybe it just take someone who became Lara Croft onscreen to tackle an issue like prophylactic mastectomy. Angelina Jolie  lit up the internet today with an op-ed about her experience having the BRCA-1 gene, a mother with cancer and her own double mastectomy.

I enjoyed reading it. While both my parents had cancer (one died from it), I am constantly reminded of my own risks. Modern medicine can now present the tests to see if the genie really is in the bottle (inside us.)

Sometimes, it just takes a lot of fortitude to be able to open it.

More to come...

All about the body

A drive-by view of a few body-related articles on the internet.

Slim is the it word in Sudan (from BBC online)

You gotta eat, but really, in a graveyard? These folks in Georgia (former Soviet republic) do and celebrate with family.

While it's not bodily related, it could be...stop apostrophe abuse. You may save a life, or life's (sorry, just had to do it to see who's watching!)

That is all. Feel free to enjoy among family and friends wherever you are.

More to come...

Sunday stealing

Here's an interesting one this week called Currently. Sums up my weekend, so I hope you enjoy!

Thinking about:
My week at work starting tomorrow.
Feeling:
Tired, anxious, not ready.
Reading:
A health care book that's actually interesting.
Listening to:
Nothing at the moment.
Wondering:
Will I get time to eat lunch at one of my favorite eateries tomorrow (have a class near one).
Looking forward to:
Friday, because vacation is coming soon!
Missing:
Family and friends who are no longer with us.
Watching:
Nothing. I'm hanging on the internet.
Eating:
Nothing at the moment. Just brushed my teeth.
Making me happy:
Life in general. Some things are a pain, but I'm not complaining!

Happy Birthday Flo!

You're more than a forgotten memory. You were a woman ahead of your time, a nurse we could certainly use today.

And Happy Informatics Nurse Day today, for all our informatics nurses out there, like Brittney, Judy, and more. May the code be with you in your EHRs, systems analysis, user training, or even telehealth visits.

Flo would be proud of your data collection and analysis efforts to make nursing care even better!

Sunday silliness

Some tech folks just don't get it. Yes, I loved this SNL episode with Google Glass.

And if that weren't enough, check out this: White Men Wearing Google Glass. My favorite is still the guy in the shower.

Happy Cinco de Mayo

Yes, it's coming! So I did some investigating, er, eating tonight with Dahey and Bubba at a local restaurant. It was delicious! The margaritas were exceptional. If you need a little help, check out this video. If you find those tequila gummy worms, let me know.  Have a great fiesta, wherever you are

Sex, lies, and videotape

Yes, there's a real old movie of the same name out there (for you young'uns who don't remember). I never thought someone at the Hotel would resort to this in order to get some attention.

Just also happens to get you fired.

WT...?

Stay tuned...

Working up to Nurses' Week

I'm going to post videos and links to posts of note in honor of Nurses' Week: Delivering quality and innovation in patient care.

I really enjoyed this video from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Nurses shatter the stereotype. My favorite part describes my job in the Hotel, because nurses really do make important decisions about how healthcare is delivered. Yes! All that and more.

Nurses even serve in Congress and run Federal agencies.

With a film like this, c'mon, don't YOU want to be a nurse?

Awww....some lucky folks

This story on Spaulding Rehab in the Boston area reminded me of when Saintarama Rehab was moved. It was particularly moving, because of the patients who were excited to be the first occupants of the new hospital space, including some injured in the Boston Marathon bombing.

One quote was particularly telling:

“Traditionally, rehab has always been relegated to whatever rundown space existed in the corner of the hospital,” Storto said. “I have wanted this [building] to be a bold statement for the rehab field, for people with disabilities and their families.”

Amen, brother, (as more than a few of my patients said, when we opened our new wing at the Hotel), amen!

Dear Hotel Geek Squad

Yes, I realize you are under pressure to upgrade all the PCs in our building by the end of the fiscal year because the IT honchos told you to do so.

It is not, however, a good idea to not tell the nurse manager that at 0300, while nurses are writing notes, recording vital signs, etc., you guys (since there are no women involved) will be pushing PC updates over the network to many computers at the nurses' stations.

In case you forgot, nurses really do work 24/7. While you are snoring away and a computer is doing your work, nurses are doing theirs live and in person. You simply cannot do this without warning.

As my professor in nursing school used to say (because some IT guy said it to her), "If I want to break something or find flaws in how it works, I give it to a nurse." So if you disturb the night nurses, they will figure out ways to break your stuff. Off/on is not a good game to play on a PC early in the AM when updates are going over the network.

Just sayin'...be nice to the night (and really all) nursing staff.

Sincerely, really, so not kidding,

Your favorite nurse ('cause I fix the easy stuff so you don't have to),
