Tomorrow is Monday

Dear Boss.

I know what day it is. Again. I really enjoyed having the holiday weekend off.

Can I please do this again soon? It's a habit I'd really like to continue into 2017.

Sincerely,

RehabRN

Using that extra day wisely

So far, the holiday weekend is working out well. I've been busy trying to take care of all my usual chores, as well as enjoying the weekend.

I have spent some time volunteering. Thankfully, this can occur at home, as I read over stuff and review it for continuing education credit. It's something new and exciting.

We've taken Bubba on his fried chicken quest. Since he's inherited a genetic proclivity for these crispy birds (from his MD grandpa, no less) and there are all sorts of new (and older) restaurants really advertising. At our latest stop, we found out there's actually a fried chicken festival coming up, so we know where we'll be eating in a couple of weeks.

I've still got my usual chores, but with the pretty weather and fun of the Fourth of July, it's been enjoyable lately. Having another day to celebrate is also a good thing, too.

Stay tuned...

Happy Easter!

For those of you who celebrate (now or later), may the joy of the Risen Christ be yours all throughout the year.

For those of you who don't, enjoy every bit of candy while you can. Most will be 50% off tomorrow. Cadbury eggs are awesome!

I have already hidden my chocolate marzipan eggs (I prefer dark) from prying characters in my home.

Until next time...I raise a glass to you and then go check the ham.

All I want for Christmas

Yes, it's a song, but it's chorus resounds in the Hotel.

On the floor, all most of our folks want is to go home for Christmas. As nice as it is in the Hotel with all the volunteers and goodies and Santa (we even offer some shopping), most people want to go home for Christmas.

The folks who have no one, or no real home that looks like Currier and Ives, however, want to stay with us. Someone to take care of you is a happy holiday for them.

Some folks want a diagnosis for an illness that just cropped up. One minute, you're healing up. The next, you're sick, sick, sick and no one seems to know why even after multiple consults.

My office mate and I are still awaiting things to do our job, namely window blinds. That HIPAA assuring privacy thing really is a big deal, Mr./Ms. Hospital Interior Design person. We cannot do all of our jobs without it. So we rearrange, we encroach, and we crash in other areas. This makes for some other unhappy coworkers, but we manage. 'Tis the price of improvement and remodeling the Hotel, we say.

However, my relative is asking for something big: an accessible neighborhood. One in which you can ambulate by walking, your walker or your electric wheelchair, without fear of being hit by cars on a busy street. And since it's not far from the Hotel, it matters to us, too.

The social media campaign began yesterday. The news story airs tonight.

It's a big Christmas wish, but one that really should come true. Somebody's life may depend on it.

Stay tuned...

'Tis the season

Oh, the holiday parties, lunches, etc. begin. We recently got our decorating requirements from the safety staff at the Hotel: no lights near patient beds, no blocking egress with trees or decorations, or covering up fire alarms (yes, they have to tell people that).

The weird requirement, though, was the "No decoration can cover more than 10% of a door". Guess I have to tell the elves that the fancy bow on our door is actually over the limit.

If that's not exciting enough, it's always fun when I'm off work and see some of our fine floor unlicensed nursing staff out shopping at 9AM. The local mall is located two miles from the Hotel. It's not lunch time, either.

Oh, I so want to call the house supervisor, to ask if he/she knows where all his/her employees are, but I know nothing will be done.

Stay tuned...

Happy 4th!

For all of you celebrating US Independence Day, enjoy! For all of you working today, I wish you a boring night and a good view of the fireworks (if there are any in your neighborhood).

More later...

The weekend is here again

Next week is a short one. Dahey returns from his travels. We have a holiday.

Can you say stress? RehabRN hits the road to visit patients in their homes (I occasionally see patients with our super home care team) all by myself. Yes, I'm going in a company car and I'm a nervous wreck. I have to get to the farthest patient first, see the next one (who can be a curmudgeon) and see if I can get the last one in before that day is over, so I don't have to go through the "request a company car" thing all over again.

I admire all of you in home care who do 5-6 visits per day. I don't know how you do it.

However, it's now Friday night. I am off this weekend, which makes me incredibly happy. I'm not going to be stressed about getting ready. I'm just going to do what I can with what I have.

Hope you have a happy weekend too, wherever you are.

Another Memorial Day

Many years ago, when we got home from a trip, we got a phone call. My father-in-law passed away. We had just seen him days before.

This year, we didn't go anywhere on Memorial Day, but we got the same news. Dahey's aunt passed away this time. A different date, a different year, but still on Memorial Day.

We will miss you Aunt M. You lived a good, long life with many children, friends and neighbors.

Just in time for the holidays...

Ah, it is always an interesting time reading the RehabLand Board of Nursing newsletter. So here's today's edition of what not to do as a nurse.

Don't say those licensing people forget the holidays...be careful out there!

Things not to do as a nurse: the holiday edition.

1. Don't sleep on the job.
Yes, that nicely made bed looks comfy, but if you forget to wake up, you have a problem. NOTE: some facilities do let you take power naps, but remember, you are PAID to come to WORK (notice the items in caps).

There are some expectations that come with that.

2. Forget to pay your income taxes.
Here in RehabLand, the Department of Take it all Revenue can report you if you don't and you can lose your license. According to the numbers, almost 25% of nurses lost their license last year due to tax issues.

3. Don't force someone to do something they refuse to consent to do, like take a bath.
Do the words assault and battery mean anything to you? I knew they did.  Patient says no, you document to CYA.

4. Drive while intoxicated.
They shouldn't have to tell you "when to say when" if you are a health care provider. But if you tend to be indulgent, get someone else to drive.

5. Fail to monitor a patient and act accordingly.
The example used in RehabLand's newsletter was disgusting. An RN (old one at that--we can tell by their license numbers) flat out did NOTHING for a patient who became sick in the morning. Let him/her throw up, wait until nights when said patient drops the phone, while satting at 82%  (normally 100% person on room air) and passes out.

The night nurse had to call EMS to take this person to the ER.

And finally the topper of this edition:

6. Don't let residents who are supposed to be on the unit (per orders) out.
Another old RN decided to go on a smoke break and six (not one two or three...) residents who were confined indoors got out of the facility. One, Z., was gone for so long that he/she did not get scheduled insulin, had glucose issues, passed out and fell out of his/her wheelchair.

Old RN left Z on the ground, got the other 5 back into the building, hoisted Z back into a chair and told a CNA to take Z to his/her room. No assessment, no documentation, no nothing.

Z sustained a head injury, which was later diagnosed when Z started having other issues.

Happy (Canadian) Thanksgiving!

Since it's Thanksgiving, it's time to give thanks!

First, I want to wish a Happy Thanksgiving to all our readers in Canada, who are enjoying their turkey and pumpkin pie today. I miss you so much Scrappy, Pierre, Monique, and Gord. Ah, another lifetime ago...(I am still going to visit EVERY provincial capital 'cause it's on the bucket list.)

However, since search engines can be flaky, I am happy to say I'm so thankful for the folks out in the audience who help you find your way here.

These are just some of them (and a couple of reviews). I am eternally thankful for you all, especially At Your Cervix (who sends more readers here than any other blog.)

Enjoy your day wherever you are!

TGMG (Thank goodness Monday's nearly Gone)

Every day begins with an act of courage and hope: getting out of bed.~  Mason Cooley

Yes, it was courageous in RehabLand today because it's cold again. I am happy it was not as cold as Sunday, or that my sister-in-law's holiday wish (snow) did not come true. Bubba needs to go to school as long as possible.

I worked on a lot of weird stuff because I may be relocating soon due to construction. Our business manager returned from medical leave recently, so I'm hoping the construction manager will give her information on when that might take place.

I just love being in limbo.

Stay tuned...

What's what: this week's Sunday Stealing

Getting ready for the week and Veterans' Day. Here's the latest meme from Sunday Stealing. Enjoy!

What is on your bed right now?
Dahey. He's asleep.

What is the best ice cream flavor?
Hmm...pistachio

Did you wake up smiling this morning?
I woke up in a hurry, so I don't remember.

What time do you wake up on a typical morning?

Between 4 and 7 a.m. (varies, but alarm assisted during the week.)

What holiday makes you sad?

It depends on who is with (or not) with you.

Where does a good night’s sleep rank on your priorities?

Top 2. Must have sleep!

One song that makes you cry?

"I drive your truck" is one that gets me.

What food do you find disgusting?

Liver. Just don't like it.

Dear Rand Paul

You should be scared. And every single one of your fellow Senators and Congressmen and women.

If you have taken any economics classes, you must have forgotten some of the key tenets:

1. People tend to be rational actors, but markets may not.
2. Printing money does not solve any problems.

To put it simply:

1. If you tell people you will pay them back, you pay them back.
2. If you do not, they send in the collection agency to take anything of value.

I'm sorry, I don't want the Chinese coming to get our national monuments, etc., if we don't pay them back.

I worry about Aunt Mabel, who has T-bills, if she doesn't have the full faith in credit in the U.S. government she will starts sewing money back into the curtains. This has happened in her lifetime, and I've seen money with those holes from the thread of an electric sewing machine.

All 80+% of us Americans who are mad as hell want two things:

1. You do your job and reopen the government.
2. You take care of the debt ceiling so the US Treasury department can pay the U.S. government's bills.

Remember this tomorrow, while you are off and getting paid, and the rest of the government employees are furloughed.

Here's hoping your Christmas presents (an economics lesson, a clue and a pink slip) get delivered early.

Sincerely not,

RehabRN

So nice!

If you love coffee, this is YOUR weekend. Lots of free joe, due to another invented holiday: National Coffee Day.

I'll drink to that!

Labor day weekend

Well, the last, official holiday weekend of summer is finally here. It doesn't feel like it though.

The temperatures are still hot enough for Bubba to jump in Mr. Smith's pool down the road, and too hot to let WildDog lounge in the grass, lying in wait for the mailman.

I've been busy doing all the stuff I didn't get done yet since I got back from the conference. Labor Day really is a laboring holiday for me.

Enjoy your Labor Day whether you labor on the floor or at home. Will raise my cold, frosty glass for you all! Cheers.

Stay tuned!

Kids say...

The darnedest things. Since I wanted to watch a grown up movie from a Redbox this weekend, I went looking online.Bubba, who sees lots of movies, told me the one I chose to rent (The Intouchables--good for a rehab nurse, eh?) is "basically rated R, Mom". Yes, I knew it was since I had to prove I was over 18.

His assessment of the last rated R movie he saw (he caught bits of Dahey watching Silkwood): "they say a lot of bad words."

Somehow, he mentioned Lincoln was rated PG-13 and had "a" words and "b" words. Then he says, "Isn't booby trap a bad word?"

It all depends, dear, it all depends. Should be an interesting Easter weekend here in RehabLand with the gathering of relatives, Dahey's birthday, and all the other assorted excitement.

Hope you all enjoy whatever holiday you'll be celebrating wherever you are.

Saturday, November 24, 2012

Ah, a couple of days...

It just takes a couple of days away to really enjoy the start of the holidays.

Thanksgiving dinner was delightful. The day was sunny and the food all turned out really good. No politics was discussed at our dinner table (a major feat). We watched movies after lunch and just vegetated. (Thank goodness for the dishwasher!)

Black Friday came and went. I worked on a paper (I actually felt like writing) and Dahey and Bubba went shopping. Since most of the hardcore shoppers were out on Thanksgiving, it wasn't nearly as crowded. I did most of my shopping online. I did go to a store, but couldn't find anything I wanted.

The boys came home with an unusual present. They decided they needed a ukelele. (Dahey wanted a guitar, but didn't like the one he saw that was in the price range). The ukelele was in the price range and even came with a teach yourself DVD. Should be interesting to see if Bubba can get good enough to qualify for one of these scholarships. (Yes, there are scholarships for ukelele!)

Today, we're going to a local holiday fair and Bubba is excited. He knows the Santa there is not "real Santa" but he promises not to mess it up for the little kids.

Should be interesting...stay tuned.

Happy St. Patrick's Day weekend

Here in RehabLand, I'll be wearin' the green and cranking out a load or two of Irish goodies, like soda bread and corned beef for the up and coming holiday here in town. Three words: parades, corned beef and cabbage.

And just maybe (wink wink) raising a glass of some other nice Irish beverage or two, I leave you with this toast:

"May the lilt of Irish laughter
lighten every load.
May the mist of Irish magic
shorten every road...
And may all your friends remember
all the favors you are owed!"
