In the immortal words of one oft-quoted Saturday Night Live character played by Dana Carvey, "Isn't that special?"
Special that you might actually have to work late to get something done tonight. Some of my coworkers will work late to make sure patients get taken care of tonight.
Special that you just happen to be exempt from any government shutdown furloughs, pay freezes and the like. Maybe I should send you my smallest bill and so should everyone of your constituents.
That's right, if you get your pay, and some of your constituents are allowed to work for free until you stop fighting amongst yourselves, then you should share.
And yes, I do know that in a mere 18 days, we could have more excrement hit the fan with that lil' old debt ceiling thingy. (I could get more technical--with that business knowledge I have--but I don't think you all get the dismal science stuff).
We have a lot of excrement at the Hotel on the evening shift. I'd sure like to send you some if you don't get your act together. Work on it or I will during the next election.
Hugs, kisses and a bowel program or two. (Hey, you deserve it ALL!)
Sincerely not,
RehabRN

You thought you had a bad day
Imagine everything you eat makes you drunk. That's right drunk, not full, sated or stuffed, but drunk.
It's an old story, but is back in the news again.
Happily, once treated with antifungals, the syndrome went away.
More to come...stay tuned.

Random randomness
Today's Sunday Stealing. Here's my answers to the questions below. Head on over there and try them for yourselves!
How did you choose your baby's or pet's names?
WildDog came with his name. Bubba's name I picked out. I told Dahey to look at whatever name he liked but that since I was giving birth, I had the first right of refusal.
He's a smart man who figured out that "happy wife, happy life" thing early.
Have you ever been fishing?
Yes, many times. On land mostly, but a couple of times in a boat.
Have you ever had your national flag painted on your face?
No.
What makes you nostalgic?
Hearing old songs (those 1980s ones are nostalgic to me, kids!)
What's the scariest thing you've ever done?
Walk across a suspension bridge in Canada.
What fairy tale character would you most associate with?
Some days Robin Hood, other days, Snow White (always cleaning up something!)
What's the worst piece of advice anyone has ever given you?
Don't follow your dreams. (really bad) You just take a longer route to get there.
If you had to describe yourself as a flavor, what would it be?
Chocolate (of course). Probably a nice, smooth dark chocolate. Some may say I'm bitter, but I'm just sweet enough for everyone else.
If you had to describe yourself as a car, what would it be?
A reliable sport edition sedan. Works well with a lot of people, safe, gets you where you are going. Looks nice. And has enough oomph to roll with the bigg'uns when needed.
Do you think laughing at someone else's misfortune is wrong?
Yes, but as they say Karma's a b&*th!

The men are happy
Bubba and Dahey are sitting watching TV. Their show of choice: some animal show which is surprising, since Dahey's usually got the History Channel, American Pickers, or Pawn Stars.
Bubba is a big fan of dogs. I should have known he'd be getting WildDog going by watching a show with a bunch of puppies in it.
Simple things: dogs, dinner in front of the TV and ice cream.
Life IS beautiful.
Hope your weekend is too, wherever you are.

But apparently around the world, these little items are causing issues in plumbing and local sewer systems.

Sometimes
I really feel sorry for my friends who are divorced or never married because in the course of looking for the love of his/her life, they may find someone like this guy.
Just remember folks, friends don't let friends find life partners on craigslist.

My mother really was a saint
Momma had coal black hair and eyes just as dark against her Celtic skin. Yes, she looked like those black Irish ancestors sans the blue eyes that Granny had.
She suffered lots of stress in her life: getting married "late" (at 25), not having kids right away, and when she had them, she nearly died.
Momma was stubborn, though. (Dad loved her for that.) After nearly dying and losing her first baby, she kept going until the rest of us were born. She finally was where she wanted to be: a mother of four children, just like all of her siblings (except for her old maid sister Maisie). Granny was pleased with all 24 grand kids. Momma was her baby, and she finally had her own brood of kids. Gramps and Granny absolutely loved being overrun by little (and big) kids at their house.
But, the happiness was short lived. In the prime of her life, Momma found out she had a terminal disease, something she would not get now, but then, they didn't know how to prevent it.
Momma died in her 40s. We were very sad. One of Momma's friends ran a local newspaper and published a long, sweet unofficial obituary for her, which I still have here somewhere. I couldn't bear to read it more than once, so I put it away.
However, I cannot imagine being a child who would have to write this obituary. We had much sadness in our home, but we were loved so much, and so rich in comparison.
I mourn not for the dead lady, but for her children.

Now for something different...
No poop this time (I could go on ad nauseum, but I won't), but when I walked toward the inpatient unit at the Hotel recently, I was met with the most foul smell of urine. Not everyone agrees that it's a sign of UTI, which is true, but some urine definitely isn't just smelly, it's overpowering.
Cleaning it up didn't get rid of it, and neither did the myriad of air fresheners used by several staff members.
Some things I just don't miss when I'm not at work.
That is all. More to come...

Shout out
I like to look at my logs every so often and say thanks, merci, danke, muchos gracias for all of you who wander over here from wherever on the internet.
First of all, let me congratulate AtYourCervix, who not only recently got certified as CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife), she also got a job as one. Lots of you end up over here from her blog At Your Cervix, so I am so very grateful for your visits.
And for all the rest of you, from St. Johns, New Brunswick, or Delta, BC in Canada, to Iceland, to Austria, back to Nampa, Idaho, Texas, California, Rhode Island and everywhere in between, we'll leave the light on.
Because there's always room for you.
More to come. The fun never takes a vacation in RehabLand.

All I can say is wow!
This is an incredible story about a new cardiac procedure.

First day of fall
Yes, it will be fall (according to Bubba, this happens this afternoon...) and the folks at Sunday Stealing have the Fall/Autumn Meme today. Here are my answers to some of them below.
Feel free to have fun and play along!
First of all, is autumn your favorite season? Why or why not?
It depends, because I really like spring, too.
Is it ‘autumn’ or ‘fall’, to you?
Fall. Autumn. Whatever floats your boat.
What kind of weather does your area get during this season?
Cool days and nights.
Which leaf color is your favorite?
I have a weakness for red ones (usually from maples), but I like yellow and orange ones, too.
Is it still fun to rake the leaves and jump in piles of them?
YES! It reminds me of childhood and a book I read as a kid about the neighbors having a big bonfire, burning leaves and putting potatoes in the fire to cook.
When can you really tell that it’s autumn?
When the leaves turn.
What is your favorite dessert for this time of year?
Apple crisp or anything with pumpkin.
Is your Thanksgiving Day in October or November, if you even celebrate it?
I celebrate every Thanksgiving whether it's in October or November. I'm usually off around that time in October (no one wants it) so I bake a pie in solidarity with my old friends in Canada, who I miss terribly, but call and think about often. Thank goodness for Facebook!
If you do celebrate it, where do you usually have Thanksgiving dinner?
At my house.
What color do you always associate with autumn?
Orange.
Is there a song that always reminds you of this season?
Autumn Leaves (the version) by Eva Cassidy (or the Cannonball Addersley version is also nice).
Do you spend a lot of time outside during this time of the year?
Depends.
How can you tell that fall is over?
Snow.
What is a typical autumn outfit that you wear?
Sweater and jeans.
Do you hate it when stores start promoting Christmas early?
YES!
What is your favorite thing about this season?
Cool (not cold) weather.

Cool (not cold) weather.
I call it a Hotel (jokingly)
However, the Hotel I work in, does not, and will never resemble the hotels (or hospitals) pictured in this NY Times article, "Is this a hospital or a hotel?"
Also, I did not pass. I guess I'm a bad judge of hotels, due to my lack of experience. (I only scored a 50%)
Forget the nail spa, after some shifts I've worked, a nice massage would be a great substitute!

Just when you thought the poop was over
I got this information in a fitness newsletter I receive via e-mail.
Still drinking E. Coli Bacteria Feces?
If you are drinking or eating any amount of aspartame (the main sweetener in diet pop), then you are drinking poop from genetically modified E. coli bacteria. Now that the patent is available online, the cat is out of the bag and everyone is talking about it. I always thought diet pop tasted like crap...
Guess I won't be drinking diet soda again, especially after all the other artificial sweetener news lately.
Enjoy your weekend wherever you are...and don't feel guilty about drinking that regular soda, either!

Friday, Friday
It was a good day knowing that the weekend was coming!
I got a few things done before one of my coworkers comes back, and we review paperwork (joy!) from one inspection, and I help the senior NP and nurse manager with some other stuff related to another inspection. Panic, of course, ensues when people realize (at the last minute) that things got to be done.
Dahey brought me lunch. I was starved, so it was all lovely!
I'm ready for the weekend! More later...

Uncle Buck
Uncle Buck was my mother's brother. He was the youngest boy. He was always cracking a joke and acting silly.
As a kid, he scared me. Eventually, I got used to Uncle Buck's shenanigans, and I hung around with his kids. They were all nice to me.
My grandmother used to always talk about when Uncle Buck was in the Army. He was a cook stationed in Korea in winter. It was so cold, if you cried, your tears would freeze as one old character at work told me one day.
One of Uncle Buck's favorite care package items was Brooks Catsup. Uncle Buck swore it could make anything, including powdered eggs, taste better.
Another thing Uncle Buck loved (probably went well with catsup) was Spam. I'm wondering what he would think know if he knew folks like him caused it to be so popular this time of year in Korea.
Uncle Buck died over a decade ago. I still think of him every time I think of care packages, though.
Overall, it's just another reminder that the little things often mean the most.

One day
When I retire, I may have to write a book entitled, "The Poop Chronicles". Some days are so FOS, as the radiologists say.
Recently, WildDog, who is getting pretty old, now only relieves himself on our front porch (next to the bushes) or in the driveway. He's gotten pretty adept at surrounding the RehabRN family truckster with feces. Most of the time, Dahey cleans up after him quickly.
Not so much this weekend. Dog poop turned into smashed dog poop in the driveway. Now, we have to get out the scraper or maybe even the dreaded hose.
And while most of you may go to boring old staff meetings where certain members of the "interdisciplinary team" only show up if there is food available and a show, we are different. The game of choice for our team: complain about the nursing staff BEFORE the manager gets to the meeting. Don't wait, don't give a recap, leave the recap to the office manager to do that.
I wonder what those industrial psychologists would say about our "team dynamics". Poopy, was my first thought, and it wasn't because incontinence in therapy was mentioned, either.
Lots of fertile ideas, and they aren't all poopy.
That is all. Enjoy your day!

I often wonder
Why patients have some really oddball, preconceived ideas, but now I know where some of them are coming from.
How to poop at work (from Gawker).
Sure, it's not high journalism, but people get a grip! Fluid, fiber and exercise will bring a return on investment, if you get my drift.
That is all.
Enjoy your Monday.

Sunday stealing
The latest meme (abbreviated because I couldn't answer all of them).
What was on your mind most today?
A friend who passed away. Today was his/her birthday.
Have a best friend?
Yes, a couple, actually.
What are you listening to?
Classical music.
Who were you last in a car with?
Dahey and Bubba
Have you ever been called cute?
A couple of times to my face.
Has anybody ever told you that you talk too fast?
All. The. Time. I try to slow down.
Did you have fun yesterday?
Yes, I did. I like Saturdays.
Do you like to cuddle?
Yes.
Are you stubborn?
Yes. One of my patients used to called me relentless. I take it as a compliment.
How’s your heart?
Good.
Are you easily amused?
Yes. I like to laugh.
Do you speak more than 2 languages?
Yes. I know lots of culinary terms (I hate missing meals!)
Is your hair naturally straight?
I wish! Takes a whole lot of hair products to get even close to straight.
What were you doing at ten last night?
Coming back from a swanky place for dinner with Dahey.
Have you made someone happy today?
Yes, I made Bubba pancakes.
